Cleon Peterson is a contemporary American artist known for his bold and provocative paintings that explore themes of power, violence, and societal conflict. His work often features stark contrasts of black and white figures engaged in visceral and chaotic scenes, evoking a sense of tension and turmoil. Peterson's distinctive style draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including classical Greek pottery, graffiti art, and 20th-century propaganda imagery. Through his dynamic compositions and stark visual language, Peterson confronts viewers with uncomfortable truths about human nature and the darker aspects of society. His paintings serve as powerful reflections on issues such as oppression, inequality, and the abuse of authority, inviting viewers to confront the complexities of contemporary life with a critical eye. Despite the often dark subject matter, Peterson's work also carries a message of hope and resilience, urging viewers to seek redemption and strive for positive change in the face of adversity. With his fearless approach to addressing challenging themes, Peterson has emerged as a leading voice in the contemporary art world, sparking important conversations about social justice and the human condition.

Cleon Peterson
Cleon Peterson’s bold, stylized paintings and prints depict a world of brute, authoritarian violence and caustic debauchery. The artist draws on fine-art influences such as Leon Golub and Paul McCarthy, as well as the aesthetics of Greek pottery, graphic design, and political propaganda posters. His striking compositions feature characters packed into dense, kinetic scenes of high-contrast conflict. Peterson works with a spare color palette, often limiting himself to black, white, red, and yellow. He received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art before going on to exhibit in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Paris, San Francisco, and beyond. His work has fetched five-figure prices on the secondary market. By explicitly depicting acts of violence, Peterson hopes to highlight the overreach of authoritarian power in contemporary society.
