About the Item

Etching by French artist Andre Dérain (1880-1954). A painter, sculptor, printmaker, and theatre designed, Dérain was known early in his career as co-founder - along with Henri Matisse - of the Fauvism art movement of the early 20th Century, its style was marked by layers of thick, painterly brush strokes and bold colors and simplified, abstracted subjects. However by the end of the first World War, Dérain style had begun to shift and by the 1920's his work reflected a turn to a classic style and with more muted palette. He also had success designing for ballet and opera productions and illustrating book with woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings
