David Hockney portrait drawing vintage Exhibition poster Graves Art Gallery '80

1982

About the Item

The portrait of the David Hockney’s mother featured on this vintage David Hockney poster is currently on view at the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition David Hockney: Drawing from Life. This poster was created for the exhibition 'Hockney's Progress: Paintings, Drawings, Prints, Theatre Designs', held at the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield, 19 September - 26 October 1980. Hockney has been an avid portraitist throughout his career, drawing and painting subjects ranging from his mother and Celia Birtwell, to art dealer Larry Gagosian and artist John Baldessari. Here his life-long muse is painted in sepia ink, donning a fur hat and round-collared coat. Her twinkling eyes gaze tenderly at the artist. The affection shared between mother and son is evident in this thoughtful and tender portrait. 31.5 x 22.5 in. / 80 x 57 cm This vintage poster was designed by the artist in our studio and comes directly from our Petersburg Press archive. It is not pre-owned. Catalogue reference: Brian Baggott, Hockney Posters, Harmony Books, New York 1987, no. 80; Off the Wall: Hockney Posters No. 92.

  • Buffalo Bill 1899 Original Battle of San Juan Hill 1 sheet of a 24 sheet poster
    Located in Southampton, NY
This rare original lithograph print is from 1899. It is one sheet of a huge 24 sheet poster that was created in 1899 to announce Buffalo Bills Wild West. The size of the complete 24 sheet poster would have been approx. 10 feet tall by 20 feet wide and would have been posted on barns and buildings in 1899 to promote Buffalo Bills Wild West before it would come to towns. This 1 sheet of the 24 sheet lithograph is in such good condition because it was found in the Lithographers draws of the print shop that created the poster. It is black and white because it was a proof that was used to create the final layout of the color poster. It indicates on the image that it is No. 2 Buffalo Bill San Juan Hill 1899, so it would have been the 2nd poster down on the left side of the large total image comprised of 24 separate sheets all unique to create the full image. You can see the two black printed lines on the left side indicate where the edge of the poster would have been. We have never seen a complete image of this rare 1899 poster. When we first acquired this rare proof over 20 years ago, we contacted the The Ringling Museum in Florida that houses a large Buffalo Bill poster...

  • Olga Hirshhorn is 90
    By Philip Pearlstein
    Located in New York, NY
Philip Pearlstein Olga Hirshhorn is 90, 2010 Lithograph on Aquarelle Arches Paper Pencil signed, dated and numbered 158/185 by the artist on the front 31 1/2 × 24 inches Unframed This terrific lithograph on elegant Aquarelle Arches paper with deckled edges was created by legendary realist painter Philip Pearlstein on the occasion of Olga Hirshhorn's 90th birthday. Olga Hirshhorn, art collector and philanthropist and wife of Joseph Hirshhorn, founder of the Hirshhorn Museum. The work was created in 2010 - when Pearlstein was 85 years young himself. It depicts Olga Hirshhorn holding Man Ray's "Indestructibel Object" in her hand. Pearlstein said it was only the second time he had ever worked from a photograph. An article in Artforum described the shindig in which each of the 185 guests was presented as a gift with Philip Pearlstein's portrait of Hirshhorn. Here's an excerpt: ..."Though he was not able to appear at the party personally, Bill Clinton addressed Hirshhorn via video and, in his own inimitable fashion, spoke best to her charms. Recalling the times they had spent together at Martha’s Vineyard, Clinton said, “I remember when we were at our first dinner together, and I asked to sit next to you.” He chuckled. “And, well, it was the beginning of quite a friendship.” Another appreciative gesture, a portrait by Philip Pearlstein, shows an unrefined likeness of Hirshhorn holding Man Ray’s Indestructible Object (and bears the stiff inscription OLGA HIRSHHORN IS 90); it was commissioned by Levy, an old friend of Hirshhorn’s. (Levy’s gift inspired some tittering from the crowd: In 1995, Hirshhorn surprised insiders by announcing that she would donate all the art she collected after her husband Joe Hirshhorn’s death—some seven hundred American and European works, worth, at the time, $10 million...
