Tauromachie

1982

About the Item

In 1982, the Musée d'Art Moderne in Céret, France, hosted the exhibition "Picasso et la Tauromachie" (Picasso and Bullfighting), celebrating Pablo Picasso's profound connection to bullfighting—a motif that permeated his work throughout his career. To commemorate this event, a color lithograph titled "Tauromachie" was produced after Picasso's original 1958 drawing "La Petite Corrida" (The Small Bullfight). This lithograph was recreated by master printer Henri Deschamps at the renowned Mourlot Press in Paris. Printed on fine wove paper, the edition was limited to 1,000 copies, each measuring 60 x 89 cm. The lithograph features a dynamic and abstract depiction of a bullfight, rendered in vibrant hues of yellow, red, and blue. This composition reflects Picasso's enduring fascination with the corrida, a subject he frequently explored, symbolizing themes of life, death, and the primal forces within humanity. His portrayal of bullfighting scenes often delved into the interplay between the bull and the matador, capturing the tension, drama, and ritualistic aspects of the spectacle.
