Biography:
American artist Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City on October 27, 1923, and grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side. In the 1960s, Lichtenstein became a leading figure of the new Pop Art movement. Inspired by advertisements and comic strips, Lichtenstein's bright, graphic works parodied American popular culture and the art world itself. He died in New York City on September 29, 1997.
Lichtenstein was committed to his art until the end of his life, often spending at least 10 hours a day in his studio. His work was acquired by major museum collections around the world, and he received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the National Medal of Arts in 1995. In 2013 the painting "Woman with Flowered Hat" set another record at $56.1 million as it was purchased by British jeweler Laurence Graff from American investor Ronald O. Perelman. This was topped in November of 2015 by the sale of "Nurse" for 95.4 million dollars at a Christie's auction.

(after) Roy Lichtenstein
Roy Fox Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. He was heavily inspired by the comic strip as a visual medium, in particular the presence of the "Ben-Day" dots that are a result of the color and tone distillation of inexpensive printing. He described pop art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting". Lichtenstein had his first one-man show in New York in 1962; the entire collection was bought by influential collectors before the show even opened. He would never take himself too seriously: "I think my work is different from comic strips — but I wouldn't call it transformation; I don't think that whatever is meant by it is important to art." When first exhibited, many art critics challenged its originality. His work was harshly criticized as vulgar and empty. The title of a Life magazine article in 1964 asked, “Is He the Worst Artist in the U.S.?” Lichtenstein responded to these claims by offering responses such as: "The closer my work is to the original, the more threatening and critical the content. However, my work is entirely transformed in that my purpose and perception are entirely different. I think my paintings are critically transformed, but it would be difficult to prove it by any rational line of argument."

This iconic image was plastered on billboards declaring "Enough of Trump" throughout the United States. (see attached photos) - and it was even prominently featured in a segment on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show about artists against Trump. (see also attached screengrab). Here, Ed Ruscha has had EE-NUF of Trumpism and he decries White Supremacy, anti-Democracy, Fascism, pollution and the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. There's no subtlety in this imagery of a tattered and burned American flag...
