About the Item
Original Lithographe EA (Epreuve d'Artiste ) Alain Bonnefoit’s trademark female nudes reflect both Western and Eastern art historical influences. A painter, engraver, and sculptor, Bonnefoit was mentored by the sculptor Antoniucci Volti, who studied under Auguste Rodin, a modern master of glorified human form. In the early 1970s, Bonnefoit traveled to Japan, where he learned about sumi-e—an ink technique rooted in linear unity that is now a fundamental element of his work. Bonnefoit’s nudes are also influenced by landscapes, specifically the rolling rural settings of Italy and France, between which he splits his time. “One should always avoid blocked, stunted, inhibited, breathless gestures,” Bonnefoit says. “As in martial arts, the quality of breathing is essential for achievement.”

Alain Bonnefoit
Alain Bonnefoit was born in Montmartre in Paris in 1937. He was a student at the École Nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d'art and École Nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. He then followed the Engraving and sculpture section of the École Supérieure des Arts de la Ville de Bruxelles. In 1962, he studied with Volti and discovered the feminine nude. His work is a celebration of the woman with both an influence of the Italian Renaissance and the Japanese painting. Herve Bazin qualified Alain Bonnefoit as the Painter of the Venus. He has exposure in France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Korea, Japan and more.
