About the Publication:
Les Lithographies de Renoir (The Lithographs of Renoir), published in Monte-Carlo in 1951 under the direction of Andre Sauret in collaboration with Fernand Mourlot, stands among the most elegant postwar tributes to Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s artistic legacy. Conceived as part of the distinguished series of fine art albums issued by Editions du livre, the publication united leading masters of lithography to honor Renoir’s enduring influence on modern art. Printed on grand velin Renage filigrane a la marque de l'editeur by the ateliers of Mourlot Freres and Georges Duval, the album combined technical precision with scholarly presentation, showcasing interpretive plates rendered with exceptional fidelity and tonal refinement. It embodies the collaborative spirit between printer, publisher, and artist that characterized the golden age of French art editions, joining other monumental projects such as those devoted to Matisse, Chagall, Braque, and Picasso. A hallmark of twentieth-century art publishing, Les Lithographies de Renoir preserves the warmth and radiance of Renoir’s aesthetic through the masterful lithographic techniques that made Mourlot Freres synonymous with excellence in fine art printing.
About the Artist:
Albert Andre (1869–1954) was a French Post-Impressionist painter celebrated for his luminous color harmonies, serene compositions, and poetic depictions of everyday life that bridged the sensibilities of late Impressionism with the formal intelligence of early Modernism. Born in Lyon, Andre studied under Leon Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris before moving to Montmartre in 1889, where he became part of the avant-garde circle surrounding Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Signac, and Henri Matisse. Deeply influenced by Renoir’s warmth and humanity, Cezanne’s structural clarity, and Bonnard’s lyrical color, Andre developed a style defined by balance, intimacy, and restraint, transforming simple scenes of domestic interiors, still lifes, and rural landscapes into meditations on light, form, and emotion. His friendships and professional connections linked him to key figures of modernism, including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, whose experiments in abstraction and symbolism paralleled his subtler pursuit of visual harmony. Exhibiting at the Salon des Independants and the Salon d’Automne, Andre also became a founding member of the “Groupe des Treize,” and his work was recognized for bridging Impressionist lyricism with a modern compositional sensibility. His tranquil depictions of life in southern France, particularly around Laudun and the Mediterranean, reveal his mastery of atmosphere and tonal rhythm—qualities that influenced later artists such as Jean Bazaine, Maurice Esteve, and Andre Brasilier. In addition to his artistic achievements, Andre served as director of the Musee de Bagnols-sur-Ceze, where he curated Renoir’s legacy and preserved the humanistic ideals of French modern art. His paintings, found today in the Musee d’Orsay, Petit Palais, Musee des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, and the Art Institute of Chicago, continue to captivate collectors for their understated sophistication, emotional warmth, and timeless beauty. The highest auction record for Albert Andre was achieved with Le dejeuner sur l’herbe (circa 1900), which sold for $519,000 USD at Sotheby’s, London, on June 24, 2003, affirming his enduring legacy as one of the key figures linking Impressionism’s radiance to the contemplative elegance of 20th-century modernism.
