About the Item

Limited Edition #3 of 20 Print of original painting, printed on Coventry rag paper. Unframed. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known by her initials, AOC, is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for New York's 14th congressional district since 2019. Collaged with various articles of and quotes from this rising congressional progressive force, Amy Smith's 'AOC' portrait is the latest in a long line of contemporary political portraiture. Glowing with vivid high key colors and graphic outlining, this piece bridges contemporary concept and technique in another addition to her 'ICON' Series. Amy Smith: Self-trained and always evolving, my artwork includes stencils, collage work, illustrations, digital graphic design, paint, and spray paint, all to create one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect both my passions and my fury, juxtaposed through the lens of imagination. While some of my work is driven by political, social, and environmental injustice, most reflect my deeply-rooted optimism and belief in the power of the feminist spirit, unity and love. My portraiture collage series is created from torn, recycled fashion magazines to represent both my love for fashion and my contempt for excessive consumption. Tearing fashion magazines that were carefully crafted to objectify women, I transform consumer messaging into words and images that celebrate the diversity and identity of both iconic and “everyday” strong, powerful women. My "Iconic Women" series pays homage to the courage, strength, and independence of women for whom we all owe a debt of gratitude. The mixed-media approach offers a new perspective on women’s empowerment that leaves behind what society demands. My artistic roots began in New Jersey, but the rich California art community is where I found new levels of inspiration and mentorship. We can ship this via standard parcel boxed with internal support to maintain the integrity of the piece. The work will be fully insured during shipping. If you prefer a different method of shipping, inquire and we are happy to accommodate your requests. Our first priorities are our collectors satisfaction, and the artwork's safety in transit. "ELEGANT", Figurative Painting of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Women in Politics
By Lauren Rinaldi
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This figurative painting titled "ELEGANT" is an original artwork by Lauren Rinaldi made of oil on canvas. This piece measures 60"h x 30"w. Please note: Artwork will be on display at The State Museum of Pennsylvania (300 North St, Harrisburg, PA) from September 26, 2021 – January 2, 2022, and will be shipped to collectors after the museum exhibition. Rinaldi’s new series was inspired by the feminist debate on how women's appearances are constantly judged, criticized and dissected; often done so with the intent of diminishing their work and contributions. This issue is prevalent in all industries, but especially in the very public and important realm of politics. Throughout mainstream media, Rinaldi found countless examples of coverage depicting what a female politician was wearing and why it was deemed “inappropriate”, rather than discussing their policies. Typical of Rinaldi’s practice, most of the works found in Representative are not classic portraits, but zoomed in studies of the subject’s legs, shoes and body from the neck down. By doing so, the work focuses on the experiences and outside societal forces that these women, and women like them, have faced. To create the works in Representative, Rinaldi used sourced photographs of female politicians that felt meaningful and powerful to her. Before painting or drawing, Rinaldi manipulates each image through cropping, elongating or changing its composition, background and color. Color is especially important in Representative, as it is an expression that is frequently rejected or criticized in politics by men. Rinaldi uses vibrant jewel tones and color swaps, like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s jacket from black to fuchsia, to represent the bold new ideas and diversity these women are bringing to United States politics. While Rinaldi does not specifically name any of her subjects, viewers will be able to recognize familiar leaders from across both sides of the aisle. Visitors will see snippets of stories through these works, like Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s sparkly boots...
