About the Publication: Lettre a mon peintre Raoul Dufy (Paris: Librairie academique Perrin et Cie, 1965) is a distinguished folio honoring Raoul Dufy (1877–1953), printed on July 22, 1965, by Mourlot Freres, Paris. Conceived as a refined homage to Dufy’s lyrical modernism, the folio comprises twenty-seven lithographs on velin Arjomari paper, executed d’apres Dufy and his contemporaries—including Jacques Villon, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Marcel Gromaire, Bernard Buffet, Charles Lapicque, Andre Marchand, and Jean Lurcat—thereby situating Dufy within the broader lineage of twentieth-century French art. The project reflects both the technical mastery of Mourlot’s atelier and the mid-century Parisian ideal of merging painterly tribute with fine-print craftsmanship, affirming Dufy’s enduring influence on modern visual culture. About the Artist: Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac (1884–1974) was a French painter, watercolorist, draughtsman, and printmaker whose lyrical naturalism, mastery of form, and devotion to craftsmanship made him one of the most respected and enduring figures of 20th-century French art. Born in Boussy-Saint-Antoine, near Paris, he studied at the Academie de la Palette and the Academie de La Grande Chaumiere, where he absorbed both classical techniques and the new ideas that were reshaping modern art. While contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, and Man Ray pursued radical experimentation in Cubism, abstraction, and Surrealism, Dunoyer de Segonzac followed a quieter yet profoundly original path rooted in direct observation, discipline, and a deep reverence for the natural world. Inspired by the structural harmony of Paul Cezanne, the tonal poetry of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, and the color sensibility of the Fauves, he fused traditional realism with a modern sensibility that valued emotion, atmosphere, and simplicity. His landscapes of Provence, Normandy, and the Marne Valley glow with serenity and rhythm, their muted colors and fluid brushwork capturing the balance between light, texture, and mood. His still lifes and nudes reflect a similar restraint and sensuality, revealing his belief in truth through clarity and touch rather than abstraction or intellectual theory. A master printmaker as well as a painter, he created more than 1,600 etchings and engravings of extraordinary refinement, elevating the medium to new expressive heights. His collaborations with writers such as Virgil, Jean Giono, and Colette in illustrated books demonstrated his ability to merge visual art and literature in perfect harmony. A lifelong exhibitor at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Independants, Dunoyer de Segonzac earned recognition for his authenticity, humility, and commitment to artistic integrity. Though less radical than his peers Picasso, Dali, and Kandinsky, his influence was deep and lasting, shaping postwar French painters like Jean Bazaine, Maurice Esteve, Alfred Manessier, and Nicolas de Stael, who admired his ability to balance structure with lyricism. His works now reside in the Musee d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou, Petit Palais, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where they continue to be celebrated for their calm, timeless beauty and technical mastery. Standing alongside Picasso, Calder, Giacometti, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray, Dunoyer de Segonzac represents the poetic soul of French modernism—an artist who united tradition and modernity through sincerity, grace, and light. The highest auction record for Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac was achieved by Nature morte a la nappe rouge (Still Life with Red Tablecloth), which sold for $181,000 USD at Sotheby’s, Paris, on December 3, 2020, confirming his enduring legacy as one of France’s most refined and collectible modern masters.
