About the Item
This vibrant serigraph by Andy Ledesma, created for the 1996 Día de los Muertos celebration at Self Help Graphics, encapsulates the spirit of the Day of the Dead through its dynamic imagery and rich symbolism. Titled "Day of the Dead: Flores de Esperanza," it features a lively ensemble of skeletons engaged in various activities that celebrate life and remembrance. The bold colors and intricate details reflect the joy and reverence associated with this cultural tradition, while the artistic style pays homage to both Chicano aesthetics and Mexican folk art.
Ledesma was a prominent Chicano artist based in Los Angeles whose work included painting, muralism, and printmaking. He often incorporates elements of street art with roots in the urban landscape of Los Angeles. His murals, in particular, have become landmarks in the city, infusing public spaces with messages of empowerment and resilience. Through his art, Ledesma aims to spark conversations about cultural identity and the ongoing challenges faced by marginalized communities.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Ledesma was also committed to community engagement and education. He frequently collaborated with local organizations to provide workshops and mentorship for young artists, fostering a new generation of creatives who can continue to amplify the Chicano narrative. By blending his artistic vision with a dedication to social activism, Andy Ledesma not only enriches the Los Angeles art scene but also contributes to the broader dialogue surrounding cultural representation and equity.
Self Help Graphics & Art’s (SHG) has commissioned the iconic Día de los Muertos Commemorative Serigraphs, internationally recognized as important works of the Chicano Art legacy. A local artist is commissioned annually to create a commemorative silkscreen print in honor of that respective year's Día de los Muertos celebration. The prints were initially created to market the celebration, serving as flyers and mailers. As the print studio became more formalized, the commemorative prints became an opportunity for artists to interpret their version of Dia de los Muertos, often - but not always - with an overlaid social justice message.

View AllFlores Para Jaurez
By Oscar Magallanes
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Signed and numbered. Flores Para Juarez pays homage to the women in Juarez, Mexico. The female figure in the image is a friend of Magallanes who had witnessed a lot of abuse growing up in Juarez, and emerged from her experience a very strong woman. Magallanes’ piece is part of an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences.
Oscar Magallanes was born in 1976 in Duarte, CA. He recalls, “The first art I saw were murals of Zapata and Mexica glyphs from the Chicano movement. These were juxtaposed next to homeboy role calls and Old English writing. I didn’t see a gallery or museum until I was 15.” After a troubled youth and his expulsion from high school at the age of fifteen, Oscar was accepted into the Ryman Arts program which he credits with encouraging him to pursue a career in art.
From 1998 to 2003 Oscar’s studio was located in the thriving Pomona Artist Colony. Oscar also worked closely with the late Gilbert “Magu” Lujan...

Corazon De Aztlan, by Frank Romero
By Frank Romero
Located in Palm Springs, CA
"Corazón De Aztlán," a vibrant print by Chicano artist Frank Romero, encapsulates the complex interplay of cultural identity, love, and urban life. The artwork showcases a striking heart motif, layered with abstract shapes and colors that evoke the spirit of Aztlán, the mythical ancestral home of the Aztec people. Among the bold designs, a subtly hidden image of a car emerges, symbolizing the fusion of traditional heritage with modernity and the everyday experiences of Chicano life in urban settings. This duality reflects the artist's exploration of cultural pride, community, and the journey of self-discovery, making it a poignant representation of contemporary Chicano art.
Throughout his 50-year career as an artist, Frank Romero has been a dedicated member of the Los Angeles arts community. As a member of the 1970s Chicano art collective, Los Four, Romero and fellow artists Carlos Almaraz, Beto de la Rocha...
