About the Item

ANTONIO FERNÁNDEZ REBOIRO Silkscreen of ALICIA ALONSO in the Ballet CARMEN 1970.....SPECIAL WINTER SALE PRICE....$790 Pop-Op Art original vintage silkscreen poster of ballet super-star ALICIA ALONSO in her renowned portrayal of CARMEN by Cuban artist Antonio Fernandez Reboiro created in 1970 for the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry. Engraved on the lower right is “Reboiro/70”. The silkscreen is in bright brilliant colors and is a fine example of mid-20th century poster art. Antonio Fernández Reboiro (1935 - 2020) was a renowned Postwar and Contemporary Cuban graphic artist best known for the film posters he designed for the Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry). The ICAIC offered Reborn a true laboratory of experimentation for two decades where he had formal freedom to give free rein to an overflowing imagination influenced by both Art Nouveau, Art Deco and geometric constructivism enabling him to become an international leader of the mid-20th Century popular movements in optical illusion art, pop art and psychedelic art. Reboiro was born to Spanish immigrants in Nuevitas, Cuba in 1935. He studied architecture and design at the University of Havana and from 1964 on worked as a poster designer for ICAIC for 20 years. In 1975, he won the Grand Prix at the Poster Expo at the Cannes International Film Festival. In1982 Reborio moved to Spain where he continues to work as a graphic artist in various media until his death in 2020. Reboiro’s works are in the collections of art museums throughout the world including the collections of New York’s MOMA, Victoria & Albert Museum in London and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. ALICIA ALONSO (1920 – 2019) was a world renowned Cuban prima ballerina assoluta who founded the Ballet Nacional de Cuba in 1955. She had serious sight problems throughout her career and trained dance partners to assist in her sense of direction. Alicia Alonso replaced Alicia Markova in 1948 for a performance of Giselle at American Ballet Theatre which brought her critical acclaim. She continued to dance with ABT for many years and became a favorite partner of Igor Youskevitch. Throughout the 1950s she was a principal ballerina with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the Paris Opera Ballet and made guest appearances throughout Europe and with the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballets in Russia. Alicia gave her last performance in 1995. She is best known for her portrayal of Giselle and her dramatic ballet interpretation of Carmen. This brilliant handmade silkscreen poster measures 20 x 29 5/8 inches with the primary image 18 inches by 28 inches. It was dry mounted on acid free board in 1980 and was stored away from light. The image is lined with an antique white 4ply mat to keep the ink from contacting the front protective glass. The frame is matte black measuring 1 1/2 inch wide and 3/4 inch deep. The finished product measures in total 22 3/4 x 32 1/2 inches. The protective glass is ultra-violet protective plexiglass. The work is ready for hanging. The poster was printed by hand with the silkscreen technique. The ink is thick flat matte and has retained its brilliance and color. As per age, there are a few areas where the paint is lightly cracked. These areas are small and do not effect the visual quality of the artwork. Please see photographs for detail.

Mikhail Baryshnikov Autographed Mid-20th Century Numbered Serigraph by Ivan Luz
Located in Glenford, NY
Baryshnikov - Classic 20th Century work by Graphic artist Ivan Luz of Mikhail Baryshnikov at the height of his performance career in the late 1970’s. The piece is number 25 in a limited series of 100 and is personally and boldly signed by Baryshnikov. An excellent example of the popular contemporary graphic and poster style of the 1970s. Measures 21.375 inches wide x 26 inches tall x .75 inches deep. It is framed in its original blue metal frame and is ready for hanging. The work is in excellent condition with no color fading. The frame has a few minor scratches that do not detract from the quality of the work or presentation. This is a very fine limited edition serigraph. A serigraph is a type of printmaking process that involves pushing ink through a mesh stencil onto paper or another surface. Each color in the image requires a separate stencil, resulting in a unique, layered print. Serigraphs are often used in fine art and textile design. Mikhail Baryshnikov is a ballet, TV and movie super-star who defected from Russia in 1974 to join American Ballet Theater...

George Platt Lynes Vintage 1949 Photograph #6 of dancer Francisco Moncion
By George Platt Lynes
Located in Glenford, NY
George Platt Lynes Photograph #6 of dancer Francisco Moncion 1949. George Platt Lynes rare original vintage 1949 gelatin silver photograph of dancer Francisco Moncion. Stamped on verso - GEORGE PLATT LYNES. Photo is 7 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches, glossy finish in excellent condition. This photograph is #6 from a collection of 12 different poses in this series taken in Platt Lynes's NYC studio in 1949 (as per the NY Public Library archives). The cloud backdrop is recognizable in other Platt Lynes photographs. Moncion was a personal friend of Platt Lynes and this photograph is from Moncion's personal photographic collection. George Platt Lynes (1907–1955), was a gregarious American portrait, dance, fashion, and male nude photographer whose career spanned the late 1920s through the early 1950s. From age eighteen, Lynes entered the cosmopolitan world of the American expatriate community in Paris when he became acquainted with the salon of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. He began photographing authors like Stein, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, and Colette and soon established himself as one of the premier fashion photographers in the Condé Nast stable, documenting the ballet companies of George Balanchine/Lincoln Kirstein, and pursuing a private obsession with seductive images of young male nudes rarely published in his lifetime. Platt Lynes photographs are in the collections of every major art museum and university archive including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Yale Art Museum, and the Smithsonian. Francisco Moncion (July 6, 1918 – April 1, 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins in the New York City Ballet created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel in Orpheus, Death in La Valse, Prince Ivan in Firebird, and the Boy in Afternoon of a Faun. He was also a choreographer and a talented painter who exhibited alongside Miro, Picasso and Carrado Cagli. Moncion was a popular model for many famed mid-century (late 1930s, 1940s - 1950s) figure photographers including Platt Lynes, Carl van Vechten, Maurice Seymour...

Orpheus represents a major 20th Century artistic collaboration between composer Igor Stravinsky, choreographer George Ballanchine, and artist/designer Isamu Naguchi. Orpheus is a thirty-minute neoclassical ballet composed by Igor Stravinsky in collaboration with choreographer George Balanchine in Hollywood, California in 1947. The work was commissioned by Ballet Society, later renamed New York City Ballet, which Balanchine founded with Lincoln Kirstein. Sets and costumes were created by Isamu Noguchi. Noguchi’s lyre harp from the production became the symbol of the New York City Ballet. Francisco Moncion (July 6, 1918 – April 1, 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins in the New York City Ballet created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel...
