About the artist:
Artist Arnold Friberg graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1935. In 1953, Cecil B. DeMille, after searching worldwide for a powerful Biblical artist, was shown Friberg's religious series then in progress. In 1957-58, Friberg's monumental 15 paintings series for The Ten Commandments toured the world, and was part of DeMille's exhibit honoring the 100th year of Hollywood, an exhibit seen by more than one-million viewers. In 1958, Arnold Friberg was made a life-time member by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), London, in recognition of his contribution to mankind through his work. Over a period of 42 years (1937-79), Friberg painted close to 300 representative "Mountie" images for the Northwest Paper Company. In 1978, the Friends of the Force, an affiliation of the R.C.M.P., commissioned Arnold Friberg to paint a life-size portrait of HRH Prince Charles with the splendid royal mount Centennial. The Friends of the Force were so pleased, they commissioned Mr. Friberg to paint a large royal equestrian portrait of HRM Queen Elizabeth II mounted on Centennial, in the palace garden at Buckingham. Other works of Arnold Friberg include: A series of 12 religious paintings commissioned by Mrs. Adele Cannon Howells; a 1969 series for General Motors depicting 100 years of American intercollegiate football; and a great number of highly prized historical paintings of the old American west. One favorite Friberg painting is the large, superb, The Prayer at Valley Forge, commissioned for the 1976 Bicentennial celebration. Arnold Friberg has been honored by his fellow artists and has been given tribute in western heritage art shows, most recently in 1991. Arnold Friberg has rightly earned his place as one of the enduring masters of our time. The son of Scandinavian immigrants born in Winnetka, Illinois in 1913, Arnold Friberg moved with his family to Phoenix, Arizona in 1916. He is the only one of the sixteen Mountie artists still living. After graduating from high school, during which he earned money painting signs for local businesses, Friberg began formal art studies at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, where he first connected with the Mountie ad campaign of the Northwest Paper Company. Moving to New York City in 1940 to work in the publishing industry, Friberg enrolled in night classes at the Grand Central School of Art, where he studied under Harvey Dunn, one of the country's top illustrators. Friberg served with the 86th Infantry Division during WW II, where he was assigned to map making and training aid production. After the war, he opened a studio in San Francisco, and built his reputation as an illustrator by producing everything from package design to fashion illustration.
By 1950 Friberg and his wife had moved to Utah, where he taught commercial art at the University of Utah. At nearly ninety years old, he still resides there. (2003) In the 1950s, two major commissions brought Friberg world-wide attention. The first was a commission to paint a series of twelve paintings illustrating the Book of Mormon. The second, for which he won an Academy Award nomination, was as chief artist and designer for Cecil B. DeMille's 1957 film The Ten Commandments. Arnold Friberg was to become the most prolific the most well-known of all the Mountie artists. He spent great amounts of time researching the RCMP and their gear, First Nations Canadians, and the landscape of Western Canada. Because his paintings so well reflected the qualities they wanted to be known for, he is he only American ever made an honorary member of the RCMP. Besides their high degrees of detail, technical proficiency and finish, Friberg's Mountie paintings are imbued with great drama and poignancy, picturing the RCMP officer in every aspect of his wide-ranging duties. Because of his work with the Mounties and their horses, in 1978 Friberg was commissioned to paint near life-size equestrian portraits of H.R.H. Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth II, with the great horse "Centennial." For these works, and in recognition of his lifetime of achievement in painting, Friberg was made a life member of the Royal Society of Arts, London. The work of arnold Friberg is held in collections and museums in the U.S and Canada.

House in the sun
By Kenneth Miller Adams
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "House in the Sun" c.1930 is an offset lithograph on wove paper by noted Taos, New Mexico artist Kenneth Miller Adams, 1897-1966. It is signed and titled in the plate. It is in excellent condition, the frame have some very small minor scratches, barely visible.
About the artist:
Painter Kenneth Adams (1897-1963) arrived on the Taos art scene in 1924, at the urging of his former instructor Andrew Dasburg. Although Adams had been born and raised less than 700 miles away in Topeka, Kansas, his journey to the Southwest had been years - and countries - in the making.
Earlier in his 20s, Adams had embarked on the Midwesterner’s equivalent of a Grand Tour: Chicago, then New York City, and finally, Italy and France. From these sojourns, the artist had absorbed all the lessons in light, color, and form that renowned teachers and rolling countrysides could offer.
Now, thanks to Dasburg’s invitation, Adams found he could stop traveling; he had finished honing his craft and found his muse. New Mexico - its people and its land - would be an infinite source of inspiration.
Adam’s painterly devotion soon impressed the prestigious Taos Society of Artists...

ABOUT THE ARTIST
“Benton’s idiom was essentially political and rhetorical, the painterly equivalent of the country stump speeches that were a Benton family tradition. The artist vividly recalled accompanying his father, Maecenas E. Benton — a four-term U.S. congressman, on campaigns through rural Missouri. Young Tom Benton grew up with an instinct for constituencies that led him to assess art on the basis of its audience appeal. His own art, after the experiments with abstraction, was high-spirited entertainment designed to catch and hold an audience with a political message neatly bracketed between humor and local color.”
—Elizabeth Broun “Thomas Hart Benton: A Politician in Art,” Smithsonian Studies in American Art, Spring 1987.
Born in 1889 in Neosho, Missouri, Thomas Hart Benton spent much of his childhood and adolescence in Washington, D.C., where his father, Maecenas Eason Benton, served as a Democratic member of Congress from 1897 to 1905. Hoping to prepare Benton for a political career, his father sent him to Western Military Academy. After nearly two years at the academy, Benton persuaded his mother to support him in attending the Art Institute of Chicago for two years, followed by two additional years at the Académie Julian in Paris.
In 1912, Benton returned to America and moved to New York to pursue his artistic career. One of his first jobs involved painting sets for silent films, which were being produced in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Benton credits this experience with equipping him with the skills necessary to create his large-scale murals.
When World War I broke out, Benton joined the Navy. Stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, he was assigned to create drawings of camouflaged ships arriving at Norfolk Naval Station. These renderings were used to identify vessels that might be lost in battle. Benton later remarked that being a "camofleur" profoundly impacted his career: "When I came out of the Navy after the First World War," he said, "I made up my mind that I wasn’t going to be just a studio painter, a pattern maker in the fashion then dominating the art world—as it still does. I began to think of returning to the painting of subjects, subjects with meanings, which people, in general, might be interested in."
While developing his Regionalist vision, Benton also taught art, first at a city-supported school and later at The Art Students League from 1926 to 1935. One of his students was a young Jackson Pollock, who regarded Benton as both a mentor and father figure. In 1930, Benton was commissioned to paint a mural for the New School for Social Research. The "America Today" mural, now permanently exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, led to many more commissions as Benton’s work gained wide recognition.
The Regionalist Movement became popular during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Painters such as Benton, Grant Wood, and John Steuart Curry rejected modernist European influences, choosing instead to depict realistic images of small-town and rural life—comforting representations of the American heartland during a period of upheaval. Time Magazine referred to Benton as "the most virile of U.S. painters of the U.S. Scene," featuring his self-portrait on the cover of a 1934 issue that included a story titled "The Birth of Regionalism."
In 1935, Benton left New York and returned to Missouri, where he taught at the Kansas City Art Institute. His outspoken criticism of modern art, art critics, and political views alienated him from many influential figures in both political and art circles. Nonetheless, Benton remained true to his beliefs, continuing to create murals, paintings, and prints that captured enduring images of American life. The dramatic and engaging characteristics of Benton’s artwork drawn the attention of Hollywood producers, leading him to create illustrations and posters for films, including his famous lithographs for the film adaptation of John Steinbeck’s "The Grapes of Wrath," produced by Twentieth Century Fox.
During the 1930s, The Limited Editions Club of New York asked Benton to illustrate special editions of three of Mark Twain’s books...
