About the Item
Signed and numbered woodcut from the edition of 15. Political satire is a frequent topic in Hazelwood's work. This print shows a stock investor dancing happily past a homeless figure on the ground, while visions of stock quotes fill his mind. This is the last print available from the edition.
Art Hazelwood calls himself artist, instigator and impresario to define the three intertwining areas of his practice. He uses printmaking within a range of political allegory and satire making work from political posters to fine press edition artist books. He has curated and organized a range of exhibitions at venues from museums to immigrant centers. He has worked for over 20 years with homeless rights groups; creating prints, and street posters, and has authored one book and contributed to another on art and homelessness.
He has been a regular visiting guest artist at San Quentin State Prison and teaches currently at the San Francisco Art Institute. He organized the San Francisco Poster Syndicate, which uses public poster printing to address issues ranging from student debt to the death penalty in Pakistan to the rise of fascism in America. Hazelwood’s prints regularly appear in several West Coast street newspapers.
His prints are in many public collections including the New York Public Library, Stanford Special Collections Library and The Library of Congress, RSDI Museum, Yale Special Collections Library, and The Whitney Museum of American Art. (Photo of Art Hazelwood by Dani Toriumi.

Art Hazelwood
STATEMENT Artist books are an extension of my work in printmaking. I started thirty-five years ago with the simple idea of putting woodcut prints together in a sequential order. Since then I’ve worked with different forms of books, large scale accordion books, complex stage books, flip books etc. However, printmaking is still the center of any project. I’m involved in many projects that have nothing to do with books, but suddenly an idea will seem to require a book form. Some of the ideas that have inspired books are unexpected; a chance hearing of an opera aria about the underworld, the curious thought of how a theater work about the Thirty Years War could be reconstructed from engravings – and then how that might translate to the Afghan War. Suddenly an idea calls out for a book form to make it complete. BIOGRAPHY For over 25 years Art Hazelwood has created politically charged prints, working with dozens of organizations from arts organizations to unions to grassroots movements. Over that period he has been consistently involved with homeless rights, including working with the Western Regional Advocacy Project, where he is the Minister of Culture. In 2017, he received the Artwork as Revolution Award from the Coalition on Homelessness. He taught at the San Francisco Art Institute where he was involved in union bargaining for adjunct faculty and was elected Shop Steward. Also at the Art Institute he was part of the founding of the San Francisco Poster Syndicate, which has brought together political poster makers from various levels of experience and backgrounds to create art for activist organizations. His artwork is in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many other institutions. In 2021 UC Santa Cruz Special Collections established an archive of approximately 300 of his political prints. He is the author of the forthcoming book Mission Gráfica: Reflecting a Community in Print, as well as Hobos to Street People: Artists’ Responses to Homelessness from the New Deal to the Present.

- Photogenic, by Yuji HiratsukaBy Yuji HiratsukaLocated in Palm Springs, CASigned, titled, and numbered from the edition of 15. Image of a young girl with a bird perched on her head while someone takes her photo. While the images have some resemblance to traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, their sense of whimsy, satire and irony relate more closely to contemporary life and western sensibilities. Young women and their relationships to shoes, food, and fashion provide much of Hiratsuka’s subject matter. Another group of his prints focus on landscape, flowers, and floral patterns. Hiratsuka’s graphic work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia. He has received numerous awards in international competitions. During the last four years he has had 14 solo shows in the United States, and international solo shows in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, Munich, Germany and Geneva, Switzerland.
