Superb 19th-century lithograph by Auguste Raffet depicting a group of Arnauts (Albanian irregular soldiers) serving as coastal guards in the Ottoman Empire, specifically stationed at Babadag (then in Rumelia, today Romania) in 1837. The composition shows four standing soldiers in dark uniforms and tall fezzes, seen from both front and back, with rifles and sabres, engaged in discussion or receiving orders, while other ranks stand in formation in the misty background.
Raffet’s mastery of line is evident in the crisp rendering of the uniforms and weaponry, contrasted against soft atmospheric shading in the background. This work is part of his larger series documenting military and ethnographic scenes from the Ottoman provinces and Eastern Europe.
