In the background, a large troop of horsemen rides along the riverbank, suggesting either a military maneuver or an ethnographic depiction of regional life. This juxtaposition of mounted riders and boat passengers is characteristic of Raffet’s interest in documenting both daily life and military culture during his travels in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.
The sheet shows scattered foxing throughout the margins and into the image area. The impression itself remains clear, with good tonal preservation typical of Raffet’s fine lithographic work. Wide margins, untrimmed.
