About the Item
Lithograph on paper realized by Auguste Raffet in 1845.
This finely detailed lithograph by the acclaimed French artist and lithographer August Raffet depicts an intimate interior scene within a mosque. A group of seated men, wrapped in traditional robes and turbans, gather in attentive conversation or instruction, while several figures stand behind them, exuding an air of solemnity and dignity.
The setting is richly observed, with patterned carpets underfoot and architectural elements such as a staircase, columns, and decorative wall details framing the scene.
Raffet, renowned for his meticulous draftsmanship and documentary realism, captures the calm and contemplative atmosphere of the gathering with striking precision.
The work is executed in delicate tones of black and sepia, showcasing his command of lithographic technique.
The sheet shows scattered foxing throughout and mild age toning consistent with its age.
This rare print is an excellent example of Raffet’s orientalist interest and his ability to convey cultural settings with authenticity and sensitivity — a collectible work for enthusiasts of 19th-century lithography.
