About the Item

Lithograph realized by Raffet in 1841. Signed and dated in the plate. Iage dimension 25x35 cm. The composition presents an intimate domestic scene with a strong ethnographic character. The group of figures is arranged in the foreground, in front of a cave-like or stone dwelling with arched entrances, typical of Middle Eastern or Caucasian architecture. Center and left: A group of seated figures, primarily women, forms the core of the composition. They are dressed in traditional garments, with long robes, veils, and headscarves. Their posture is calm and contemplative, evoking a gathering or storytelling moment. One man plays a large frame drum (daf or tambourine), adding a sense of music and festivity to the scene. Foreground: A woman with her back to the viewer reclines on a patterned carpet, facing the group. This reclining pose introduces a sense of casual domestic intimacy. Right: A standing young woman, leaning against the wall, holds a long musket, her attitude dignified and guarded. Nearby, two children, one unclothed, stand in a doorway, adding touches of realism and daily life. Details: Around the figures are scattered domestic objects—vessels, a coffee pot, a large tray with small bowls or cups, emphasizing hospitality and traditional practices. This work belongs to Raffet’s Orientalist series documenting his travels through the Crimea and the Caucasus. It illustrates a social and cultural gathering among Tatars or Armenians, emphasizing customs such as music, communal life, and the role of women.
