This finely detailed lithograph by Auguste Raffet depicts a rustic Crimean village scene, part of the artist’s celebrated series created during his travels with Baron de Baye in Russia. Executed with Raffet’s characteristic precision and documentary spirit, the composition presents thatched dwellings, peasants in conversation, grazing horses, and a wide, open steppe landscape in the background. The artist’s masterful lithographic technique captures both the textures of the rural environment and the atmospheric vastness of the Russian steppe.
Printed in 1843 as part of the monumental illustrated volume Voyage dans le Sud de la Russie et la Crimée, published in Paris, Raffet’s series provided Western audiences with a vivid record of Russian and Crimean life and architecture at a time of heightened cultural and political interest.
Wide margins; overall light surface toning and scattered foxing consistent with age; central image well preserved with strong contrasts.
