About the Item

Lithograph realized by Raffet in 1838. Signed and dated in the plate. Image dimension 20x29 cm. The composition captures a striking juxtaposition between land and water. In the foreground, a large wooden boat glides across a calm river. The vessel is crowded with passengers, who appear to be civilians or possibly soldiers in transport. They sit closely packed, their heads forming a continuous line of small white shapes, creating a strong contrast with the dark hull of the boat. Two rowers, seated at the bow and stern, propel the craft steadily forward. Behind them, stretching across the middle ground, is a long procession of cavalry. Dozens of mounted horsemen ride in a loose but continuous line, their movement animated in contrast to the boat’s stability. Some horses appear to be trotting, while others are halted, suggesting both action and rest. The riders, wearing tall headgear, seem to belong to regular army formations, reinforcing the print’s military theme. The landscape is barren yet imposing: low hills rise in the background, their slopes rendered in soft tonal shading. The water reflects the figures, heightening the sense of stillness in the immediate foreground while emphasizing the dynamism of the march behind. This lithograph illustrates the duality of army movements: the practical transport of men and supplies across waterways, and the constant protection afforded by cavalry escorts. Raffet captures not a battle scene, but the logistical backbone of warfare—highlighting how troops, convoys, and populations moved through contested landscapes.
