This artwork titled "Then Said Samuel to the people" from the suite "Judges and Kings" is an original etching on Arches paper by Ukrainian/American artist Ben Zion Weinman, 1897-1987. It is hand signed, referenced VII and numbered 18/65 in pencil by the artist. The image (plate mark) is 17.5 x 13.75 inches, sheet size is 22.25 x 17.75 inches. Plate etched by the artist, published by Graphofiles Associates, New York, and printed by Roger Lacouriere, Paris. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the artist: From childhood Ben-Zion (1897-1987) followed an innate sense for art with a singular vision by gathering objects, walking and drawing from nature. At the same time he was deeply involved in the re-kindling of the Hebrew language — teaching and writing fairytales, dramas and poetry. He emigrated from the Ukraine to the US in 1920 and immersed himself in a vibrant community of Hebrew and Yiddish writers in New York. Despairing of language as it was sullied by the propaganda of the Second World War and the disappearance of the European Jewish voice during the Holocaust, Ben-Zion’s paintbrush became the prime vehicle of his artistic output. From his first one-man exhibition at the Artist’s Gallery in 1936 until his retrospective at the Jewish Museum in New York City in 1959, Ben-Zion was represented by major galleries and museums. He was a founding member of “The Ten,” a group of expressionist painters who positioned themselves against conservative and academic painting prevalent in pre-war New York. Ben-Zion followed his own vision, working prolifically into his 90th year.     According to Gesine Tosin, Richard Hamilton irritated contemporary critics in the 1970s with a series of works -- romantic images of flowers, still lifes and landscapes, interspersed with scatological motifs. "Once exhibited, the critics regarded the paintings as evidence either of a kinky sexual aberration or an early onset of senility." (Hamilton 1982, p.79. ) Trichromatic flower-piece is one of these works, which questioned the categories of high and low art through its appropriated imagery. In the words of Richard Hamilton: “The Shit and Flowers series was was inspired in a sense by Barcelona, walking on the Ramblas where thousands of postcards are displayed. (…) I bought three pictures of flowers.     Vintage Soviet Government propaganda lithographic poster titled with Ukrainian text that reads “Corrupt Petliura has sold Ukraine to the Polish landowners. Landowners burned and plundered Ukraine. Death to landowners and Petlyurovites.” Originally issued April 1920 following the Treaty of Warsaw (also the Polish-Ukrainian Agreement).     The Bolshevik Era (1917-1921) was a life and death struggle for the Bolsheviks and their ideology. The propaganda poster was everywhere, as the Bolsheviks struggled to win the Civil War against the Whites and fought the Poles over control of the Ukraine and parts of modern day Belarus. The early Soviet poster - an incredible 3600 designs - was remarkable for its revolutionary fervor and biting wit. Powerful visual symbols were invented, like the red star and hammer and sickle. These four posters are as follows: 1." May 1st All Russian Subbotnik " is a Russian poster promoting the first all Russian Subbotnik held on May 1st, 1920 in which Vladimir Lenin was in attendance. Moor ("Д. Моор"). During the 1900s and 1910s he was a comic pioneer, making satirical comics ridiculing the Czarist regime and censorship. Under the Soviet regime he became one of the most celebrated propaganda artists. Both during the First and the Second World War he ridiculed the German army. In his work Moor often made use of sequential illustrated narratives or comics. He was the house cartoonist of magazines like Budilnik and later Bezbozhnik. Alexander Petrovich Apsit was born in Riga on 25th March, 1880. He moved to Saint Petersburg in 1894 and attended art school and became a student of Lew Dmitriew-Kawkaski. Aspit worked for various Russian magazines and on the outbreak of the First World War was employed by the government to design war posters. After the Bolshevik Revolution Apsit was commissioned by the State Publishing House to design revolutionary posters.
