Benton Murdoch Spruance (1904-1967) was a unique artist and a pioneer in color lithography who forged a vast and very personal oeuvre. His body of work is unusually diverse of subject and particularly attractive for its rich stylistic qualities. Spruance spent his entire life in Pennsylvania, mostly of it in Philadelphia. As a tireless educator, Spruance was the chair of both the Arts Department at Beaver College (now called Arcadia University), as well as Chairman of the Printmaking Department of the Philadelphia College of Art. Many of his works are publicly displayed throughout his hometown and his accomplishments were recognized with his appointed to the Philadelphia Arts Commission in 1953. He also started “Prints in Progress”, a program to teach printmaking to public school students through demonstration and participation. As with most educators, he also loved to learn. He was an avid lithographer and pioneered many methods and techniques for color lithography. He created over 500 editions during his life, with a varied range of subjects, from quiet suburban scenes to serene portraits. Many of his compositions are inspired by biblical narratives, as well as stories from mythology. However, wide ranging inspiration pushed Spruance to also create lithographs depicting war, sports, cities, nudes, or animals. His use of wide tonal ranges and gradations make even his black and white images come to life. His art has a unique feel, with distinctive WPA influences, while also utilizing surrealist curvature and compositional elements. His style and public service to Philadelphia make Benton Spruance, and the many works of art he left behind, an integral part of art history in the United States in the Twentieth Century.

Benton Murdoch Spruance
A pioneer in color lithography, Benton Spruance spent most of his life in Philadelphia, where he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and became one of the city’s leading artists. In the twenties and thirties Spruance was known for prints that one critic described as his “velvety urban scenes and ‘social conscious’ series,” which chronicled the life of ordinary men and women at work and play. However, Spruance was also a painter and draftsman who during this period took advantage of two Guggenheim fellowships to travel throughout the United States and Europe and sketch landscapes. In the forties Spruance began producing moody, psychologically charged lithographic portraits of women, followed by mystically tinged work, based on biblical passages, that became increasingly subtle and sculptural in effect. Despite the demand for his work (he produced more than 500 lithographs during his career), Spruance continued to teach. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the art department at Beaver College and had recently retired from the chairmanship of the printmaking department at Philadelphia College of Art.

Nahum Tschacbasov
Biography :
Russian-American artist Nahum Tschacbasov (1899-1984) is known for his cubo-surrealistic works which feature a strong psychological element. Some of his work bears a resemblance to work of another Russian-American artist--David Burliuk. He was somewhat of a late starter, moving to Paris in 1932 to study under Adolph Gottlieb, Marcel Gromaire and Fernand Leger. He had his first exhibition in Paris in 1934. He then returned to the US where he joined Rothko and Gottlieb at the Galery Seccession. He was one of the co-founders of The Ten, a group of social conscious abstract painters which included Rothko, Gottlieb, Joseph Solman and Ilya Bolotowsky, among others.
In 1944, he began to work at Stanley Hayter's Atelier 17, a center for surrealistic ideas. Between 1936 and 1943, he had five one-man exhibitions at the ACA Galleries and participated in five group shows. He also exhibited at the Whitney, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Knox Albright Museum, the Chicago Institute of Fine Art and Corcoran, among others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Met, the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum and the Jewish Museum.
Tschacbasov has been the subject of two recent retrospective at Fletcher Gallery, Woodstock, NY and Arthur...
