About the Item

Bernard Schardt worked on the the WPA in NYC during the Depression. (During this period, off and on, he lived with friend and colleague Jackson Pollock.) In this courtroom scene there's a defendant, as well as lawyer, officer, and a judge. The title 'Appeal Denied' is reflected in somewhat desperate body language of the defendant. This print was made in an edition of 25 for the NYC WPA. There are stains on the reverse of the sheet where labels were affixed. It is signed and titled in pencil. Here it's listed as 'intaglio' but more precise information would be that it is an etching with aquatint.
