About the Item
Clearly a scene in France, the Bernard Sanders is showing us a seamstress/lacemaker. She seems to be shaping a traditional coiffe (sometimes 'coif') -- an elaborate headpiece worn by French women from the early 1820s. (The styles and constructions are unique to each locale. Those of Brittany are especially intricate and noteworthy.)
So often a mysterious or evocative atmosphere permeates the work of Sanders (1906-1967). Here the woman is seated and deeply focused on her chore. Further, it's her demeanor that's really the subject -- the calm, dedicated role she is playing in maintaining both a treasured symbol of local life and a precious object. Sanders is showing us the woman, not the object -- we can hardly see it!
Under 'medium' I've used the boarder term 'intaglio.' but most probably this is a drypoint. It is signed in pencil.

- Condition:Really very good condition. The pin holes are from the process of drying the print to keep it flat after printing. There are traces of old tape (or hinges) in the upper corners. Looking good for about 100 years!
