About the Item
Carl Ashby, Pensive Lady, 1942, ink and watercolor, retains fresh, clear color.
A native of New Mexico, Carl Ashby (1914-2004) moved to New York City in 1938 following a stint with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He attended the Art Students League and Atelier 17 and studied at New York University. He taught at the Parsons Division of the New School at New York University from 1970 to 1995, and made a significant contribution to the Abstract Expressionist movement. He also studied with Hans Hofmann, George Grosz, and Morris Kantor.
This ink and watercolor drawing is dated 1942, on both the front and the reverse. That puts it into the early days of this country's entry into World War II and adds significance to the title, Pensive Lady. But it is noteworthy that the colors remain bright. Clearly this drawing was never framed and exposed to daylight -- no mat burn, toning, or fading. The result is a drawing that is 'pensive' in it's subject but optimistic in the general demeanor. Of course it could also reflect the artist's personal situation. He had recently made two major life-changes: he moved to New York City and joined the Art Students League to further his career and then married a fellow League student, Estelle Gray, in 1938.
One more word: It's hard to see the pencil annotations on the reverse in the photographs. The shot of the reverse is most useful for the horizontal crease and soiling, as well as pencil signature, title, and date.

Seated Figure by Geno (sometimes Genoi) Pettit, made in 1945, is a wonderfully 'moderne' image. The woman is wearing a roman-inspired blouse or dress and is shown against a yellow/green, chartreuse background. There is the feeling she is about to lead an ancient procession at any moment!
