About the Item

A beautiful poster advertising a less famous, doomed Cunard ship. c1950. Offset lithograph in colors on lightweight white wove paper, 16 x 12 3/8 (420 x 315 mm); sheet 21 7/8 x 17 7/8 inches (555 x 454 mm), full margins. In good condition with an abrasion that caused a tab of paper to have accordioned in the upper-right margin, well outside of the image area. Colors are fresh and bright, perfect for framing. A lovely mid-century travel poster depicting the "Green Goddess," Cunard's luxury cruise ship, Caronia. Immediately recognizable by her unique green hull, Caronia experienced many incarnations during her brief 25 years in commission. Christened by then Princess Elizabeth, Caronia cruised between Southampton and New York for Cunard beginning in 1949, then embarked on cruises from New York to the Caribbean, and then on to world cruising, until she ran aground in Egypt while transiting the Suez Canal in 1952. She also ran aground in Sicily in 1956, and then again in 1958 when she was driven against the breakwater in Yokohama harbor, destroying a lighthouse in the process. In 1968, after failing profits, the Caronia, which required refitting, was sold to Star Line and was renamed Columbia. Columbia was plagued with issues that undermined public confidence (including an explosion in the engine room that killed an engineer), and was eventually sold to Universal Cruise Lines and renamed Caribia. Caribia continued to be hindered by accidents and unfortunate events which eventually lead to the difficult decision to sell the ship for scrap. On the way to a breaker's yard in Taiwan, the ship, which was being towed by the ocean tug, Hamburg, sailed into Typhoon Mary off of the coast of Guam. In danger of capsizing, the Caribia was cut loose. Once a jewel in the Cunard crown, the ghost ship drifted lifelessly into the breakwater at Apra Harbor, where it was wrecked. It was discovered that the Caribia had come to rest beside the wreck of a Korean War-era landing craft that was loaded with tons of munitions. It took 5 months to remove the explosives before the Caribia could be addressed. Once it was safe, the Caribia was cut up in sections over the course of a year, until the last portions of the hull were removed in 1975. The Caronia was only in active service for a total of 19 years.
