About the Item
'Hommage à Michel-Ange' is an original color lithograph signed by the contemporary artist Claude Weisbuch and shows the strong interest he took in the High Renaissance. In the image, Weisbuch draws from Michelangelo's frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, looking to god as he created the Earth and the Heavens. In the Renaissance, the artists with creative genius were understood to be conduits for the creativity of God. Thus, as Weisbuch illustrates the creator of all things, he inherently aligns his own creativity to that of the heavens. Weisbuch has created this moment using his typical style of way-finding lines, natural colors, and dramatic drapery, evoking movement and change while also recalling the drawings of the old masters themselves.

Claude Weisbuch was born in Thionville, France in 1927 and was a pupil at L' École des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, France. As a painter, engraver, and exceptional lithographer, Claude Weisbuch has painted active motifs, such as musicians, horses, characters. Dominating in his work, by the relief and the velvety line which characterizes drypoint, his etchings are the strongest representations of his figures, intensely lively after 1960s.
Using dark tones which express his sharp sense, Claude Weisbuch ceaselessly captures life's dynamics, as the pictorial, musical and literary expressions that are essentially human. Whether it is the impassioned violinist, the mercurial actor, or the sitter shrouded with silent intensity, they have all been rendered with Weisbuch's love for drama. The brushstrokes are sweeping and bold while the paint is fluid. His pictures, full of movement, give one the impression of time-lapsed motion, and display an expression of passionate humanity tinged with a unique energy.

Weisbuch has been quoted as saying “I like the sketch, the uncompleted, the painting filled with mystery,”. "Some important things to look for in evaluating an artist for such a position of honour are: an inventiveness of style, a prolific output, and a consistency of quality--Claude Weisbuch has all three. His style is unique with a color range that is rich and warm in tone, certainly equal to that of Rembrandt. The fluidity of line and creation of motion is even more vigorous than in the work of Daumier or Toulouse Lautrec. His creativeness in composition is awesome and seems to have infinite possibilities of variation and vision." - David Barnett

'The Dealer' original signed color lithograph from the Gambler Series
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'The Dealer' is an original lithograph from John Doyle's 'Gambler' series. The suite included ten different prints, each image capturing the exhilaration and danger of the games of chance played by casino goers. In one of the prints, a woman pulls the lever of a slot machine; in another, men queue before a lottery ticket window. In 'The Dealer,' a man faces the viewer directly. His stern gaze is hidden behind dark glasses as he springs cards between his hands in a flurry of aces and spades. His clothes reflect both the fashion of the 1970s while also hearkening to the villains of Western films. All the while, he is framed from behind by the arch of a blackjack table, which is itself lined by glistening lights of the casino.
