About the Item
This poster, published in Paris, was produced for a 1978 exhibition of the prints of contemporary artist Claude Weisbuch. This example is rare and unusual in that it is signed by the artist and inscribed to David Barnett, one of his most significant US dealers. It features one of the artist's haunting prints that is at once a self-portrait and also one of his iconic homages to the self portraits of Rembrandt van Rijn. Such images being featured on the publicity material for the exhibition demonstrates Weisbuch's devotion to the old masters while also comparing his own genius to theirs. Claude Weisbuch was born in Thionville, France in 1927 and was a pupil at L' École des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, France. As a painter, engraver, and exceptional lithographer, Claude Weisbuch has painted active motifs, such as musicians, horses, characters. Dominating in his work, by the relief and the velvety line which characterizes drypoint, his etchings are the strongest representations of his figures, intensely lively after 1960s.
Using dark tones which express his sharp sense, Claude Weisbuch ceaselessly captures life's dynamics, as the pictorial, musical and literary expressions that are essentially human. Whether it is the impassioned violinist, the mercurial actor, or the sitter shrouded with silent intensity, they have all been rendered with Weisbuch's love for drama. The brushstrokes are sweeping and bold while the paint is fluid. His pictures, full of movement, give one the impression of time-lapsed motion, and display an expression of passionate humanity tinged with a unique energy.

Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an american artist born in New Jersey and taught art classes in Massachusetts. He has received many public commissions (including a bas relief for the FDR Memorial), honors, and his work is owned by many major museums around the world. Additionally, Baskin was a teacher at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. As a champion for human rights, Baskin created many pieces celebrating those who were seldom recognized.

About Claude Lafortune:
Claude Lafortune was born on July 5, 1936 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was an actor and art director, known for IXE-13 (1972), Pop Citrouille (1979) and Le carnaval des animaux (1978). He was previously married to Suzanne Côté. He died on April 19, 2020 in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada.
As a graduate of the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, Lafortune collaborated on many graphic design projects before he became famous for his paper art.
He had an exhibit devoted to his paper art work—titled Colle, papier, ciseaux—at the Musée des cultures du monde in Nicolet, Quebec. The exhibition has traveled to Longueuil, Montreal, Terrebonne, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Lachine, Chicoutimi, Bonaventure, La Malbaie...
