About the Publication: The folio Les Peintres mes amis (The Painters My Friends), published in Paris in 1965 by Editions d'art Les Heures Claires, stands among the most ambitious postwar French printmaking collaborations. Conceived as a celebration of modern art’s greatest masters, the volume unites original graphic works by Terechkovitch, Cavailles, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Dufy, Vlaminck, Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Braque, Villon, Derain, Zadkine, Miro, and others, alongside critical essays by Andre Warnod. Each plate was executed under the supervision of Paris’s foremost ateliers—Mourlot Freres, Lucien Detruit, P.-J. Ballon, Manuel Robbe, and Raymond Jacquet—representing the finest techniques of lithography, etching, and woodcut. This luxurious folio exemplifies the artistry and craftsmanship of mid-20th-century French printing, merging text, image, and handcraft into a unified artistic statement. A triumph of the livre d’artiste tradition, it remains a vital record of the enduring creative dialogue between the painters, printers, and publishers who defined the visual culture of their time. About the Artist: Constantin Terechkovitch (1902–1978) was a Russian-born French painter celebrated for his radiant use of color, rhythmic brushwork, and lyrical depictions of modern life that made him a defining figure of the 20th-century School of Paris. Born in Moscow and trained at the Moscow School of Fine Arts, he settled in Paris in 1920, where he joined the city’s legendary avant-garde alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Immersed in this era of innovation, Terechkovitch forged a distinctive artistic language that blended the emotional freedom of Fauvism, the spiritual lyricism of Chagall, and the dynamic modernism of Miro and Calder. His paintings—marked by sweeping brushwork, radiant tones, and the joyous movement of form—celebrated the beauty of everyday life through scenes of families, lovers, musicians, dancers, and circus performers, transforming ordinary subjects into poetic meditations on light and color. Exhibiting regularly at the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Independants, and the Salon des Tuileries, he earned widespread acclaim for his ability to merge structure and spontaneity, emotional warmth and compositional precision. His mastery of color, from glowing reds and golds to tranquil blues and greens, gave his paintings a musical quality that conveyed harmony, vitality, and optimism. While many of his contemporaries pursued abstraction, Terechkovitch remained committed to the figure, reinventing it with modern vitality and sensual grace. Internationally recognized by mid-century, he exhibited throughout Europe, the United States, and Japan, and his works were collected by museums and private collectors who admired his fusion of Russian emotionalism and French elegance. His influence extended to later generations of lyrical colorists and figurative modernists, including Andre Brasilier and Gabriel Godard, who were inspired by his balance of structure, rhythm, and feeling. Terechkovitch’s art continues to be celebrated for its joyful humanism, emotional sincerity, and timeless beauty, standing as a testament to his belief that art should reflect the harmony of life itself. Today, his works reside in major collections worldwide, including the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, and he is remembered as one of the great lyrical painters of modern Europe. Standing alongside Picasso, Calder, Giacometti, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray, Terechkovitch remains a master of color and emotion whose art radiates warmth, movement, and poetic grace. His highest auction record was achieved by Les Maries (1957), which sold for $90,816 at Sotheby’s, London, on June 28, 2017, reaffirming his enduring legacy as one of the most elegant, expressive, and collectible modern painters of the 20th century.
