Danielle McKinney (b. 1981, Montgomery, AL) is an acclaimed American artist known for her intimate, cinematic portrayals of solitary Black women in moments of repose—smoking, reading, resting—within moody, dreamlike interiors. Trained in photography (BFA from Atlanta College of Art; MFA from Parsons), McKinney transitioned fully to painting during the COVID‑19 lockdown, layering oil paint over black-primed canvases to craft richly hued, chiaroscuro scenes that evoke Matisse’s palette and Hopper’s voyeuristic stillness. Her work reclaims Black feminine space and agency in the domestic sphere and is held in major collections like the Hirshhorn, Dallas Museum of Art, and the Studio Museum in Harlem
