About the Item
Rare and beautiful lithograph by Edouard Manet .
"La Barricade " illustrates a group of soldiers executing a band of rebels on a street corner. This artwork deals with a subject inspired by the events of the civil war in Paris. Very good conditions, but with small ripples on the higher center.
2nd State : With lettering, bottom center, "Imp.Lemercier et Cie., Paris".
The composition of this lithograph repeats the figure grouping used in the "Execution of Maximilian ",a painting by Manet dated 1867-1868 with several important differences; for example, the format has been changed from a horizontal to a vertifcal shape and also the number of the soldiers is different (6 in the lithograph, 8 in the painting).
In the "Execution of Maximilian" there is the echoes of Goya's "Executions of May 8, 1808". The relationship to the artwork by Goya became stronger in "La Barricade" where Manet seized on the ironic reference in Goya's picture to the theme of light.
The lithograph is glued on the sheet with the printed central inscription "Imp. Lemercier et C.le, Paris". In very good conditions, except for corrugated paper and some thinnings of paper on the higher margin. Including a black cardboard passepartout attached with tape on the cardboard sheet (cm. 64 x 48.8).
Edition of approximately 50 prints.
