Label verso for L H Bresler. Ernest Stephen Lumsden RE, RSA (1883 – 1948) Printmaker, painter, teacher and writer. In the mid 1890’s Lumsden enrolled at Reading Art School, where he studied painting and drawing. He continued his studies briefly at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1903 and visited Spain to study Velasquez. Aged twenty-two, Lumsden taught himself to etch. He soon became adept in the medium and established a considerable reputation as a printmaker, he exhibited widely and was associated with the finest academies and Institutions. In 1910 Lumsden travelled to British Columbia in Canada and from there he carried on to Japan and Korea, China and Burma. He left teaching in 1912 and travelled to India where he met and married ex-colleague, painter and printmaker Mabel Royds, best known for her colour woodblock prints. Lumsden served with the Indian army 1917 – 19, allowing for extensive travel throughout India and the Himalayas, which would serve as inspiration for the subjects of many of Lumsden’s etchings and Royds’ woodcuts. The three sets of Indian prints (etchings and aquatints) were noted as Lumsden’s highest achievement, incorporating a fine sense of composition and use of line. His sympathetic rendering of scenes in towns, villages and monasteries, with particular reference to Benares, Jodhpur, Kashmir and Ladak near the Tibetan border, celebrated the traditional way of life. Lumsden’s technical virtuosity includes an economy of line, carefully built compositions and, above all, a mastery of India’s intense light. Taylor & Brown’s Galleries in Edinburgh in March 1920 included not only the etchings for which he had gained so much recognition, but also a number of drawings and oil paintings. He wrote The Art of Etching, published in 1925 which remains a standard work on the subject. Further Indian themes followed his 1927 visit to India. Lumsden had at his command the technical resources described in his book, The Art of Etching, and his 336 plates produced between 1905 and 1935 form an impressive body of work. Marius Bauer, a prolific Dutch etcher whom Lumsden greatly admired was in India in the decade before. Some of the finest etchings from the first half of the 20th century were made in and of India and Lumsden is recognised as one of the practitioners who helped to develop the technique of etching. “A man of the highest sincerity and integrity he was most lovable to those who knew him well. He was always ready to help and encourage young artists, many of whom will gratefully remember the real and kindly interest he showed in their work. His mind and sympathies could extend to the most “modern” adventures. His own work – academic, perhaps, in the best possible sense (having the qualities of dignified design and fine drawing) – was no hindrance to his appreciation of aims more experimental than his own. This generosity of mind was exemplified also in the large and valuable collection of prints and drawings done by very different artists which he collected during his life” (Transcribed from the 1943 Royal Scottish Academy of Art Annual Report) Indian etchings: First Burmese and Indian Set (25) of 1912; Second Indian Set (27) of 1913 – 14; and Third Indian and Ladak Set (14) of 1919, which include a few etchings from the borders of Tibet. For the next fourteen years there is a mixture of subjects, including portraits, mostly of other artists and frequent reversions to Indian themes The work of Ernest Stephen Lumsden features in DAG’s book and exhibition Destination India (DAG pp160-165, Delhi 2025)
