This lithograph was one of sixteen Federico Castellón produced in 1968, published by Aquarius Press, to illustrate Edgar Allan Poe's 1832 story 'The Mask of the Red Death.' The image is explicitly sexual, showing a man and woman in coitus, using the crackling quality of the print to suggest the darkness and shadows of night.

Federico Castellón was born in Almeria, Spain and came to the United States in 1921 at the age of seven. Though virtually self-taught, he received a fellowship from the Ministry of State of the Spanish Republic. In 1935 he participated in the Paris Exhibition of Spanish Artists, which included Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Juan Gris. Beginning about 1940, he became a serious printmaker, both in lithography and etching. His work is mostly done in the surrealist tradition and his prints include "Bengalese Sisters," "By the Arks" and "The Proposal," among many others. He became an American citizen in 1943 and taught successively in New York at Teacher’s College of Columbia University, Pratt Institute, and Queen’s College. Castellón received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1949 and the following year he was elected a member of the National Academy. He was awarded a second Guggenheim Fellowship in 1968.

Federico Castellon
Federico Castellón (1914-1971) was a Spanish-American artist known for his distinctive style that blended surrealism and realism. Born on the island of Almeria, Spain, he moved to the United States with his family at the age of seven. His artistic talent was evident from a young age, and he received a scholarship to study at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art when he was just 15. Castellón's work is characterized by a dreamlike quality, often incorporating elements of fantasy and a strong narrative sense. His early exposure to both Spanish and American cultures profoundly influenced his artistic vision, blending European surrealism with American realism to create a unique visual language. He was particularly renowned for his lithographs, etchings, and illustrations. His illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" and other literary works are highly regarded for their intricate detail and haunting imagery. In addition to his printmaking and illustration work, Castellón was also a skilled painter and muralist. His paintings often featured surreal, dream-like scenes with a focus on human figures, and his murals are noted for their dynamic composition and rich symbolism. Throughout his career, Castellón received numerous awards and honors, and his work was exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. His legacy continues to influence artists and is recognized in the art world for its unique blend of surrealism and realism, along with a profound narrative quality that speaks to the human condition.

View All"Annette"
By Alberto Giacometti
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Annette" is a black and white lithograph after Alberto Giacometti, published in Derriere le Miroir. It depicts the bust of a nude woman in scratchy lines. Annette was Alberto's wife and frequently modeled for his sculptures and drawings.
10" x 7 1/4" art
21 1/4" x 18 5/8" frame
Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) was born in Borgonovo, a Swiss municipality, to the post-impressionist painter Giovanni Giacometti.
In 1922 he moved to Paris to study under the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, an associate of Auguste Rodin. It was there that Giacometti experimented with cubism and surrealism and came to be regarded as one of the leading surrealist sculptors. Among his associates were Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Bror Hjorth and Balthus.
Between 1936 and 1940, Giacometti concentrated his sculpting on the human head, focusing on the sitter's gaze. He preferred models he was close to, his sister and the artist Isabel Rawsthorne (then known as Isabel Delmer). This was followed by a unique artistic phase in which his statues of Isabel became stretched out; her limbs elongated. Obsessed with creating his sculptures exactly as he envisaged through his unique view of reality, he often carved until they were as thin as nails and reduced to the size of a pack of cigarettes, much to his consternation. A friend of his once said that if Giacometti decided to sculpt you, "he would make your head look like the blade of a knife." After his marriage to Annette Arm in 1946 his tiny sculptures became larger, but the larger they grew, the thinner they became. Giacometti said that the final result represented the sensation he felt when he looked at a woman.
In 1962, Giacometti was awarded the grand prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale, and the award brought with it worldwide fame. Even when he had achieved popularity and his work was in demand, he still reworked models, often destroying them or setting them aside to be returned to years later. The prints produced by Giacometti are often overlooked but the catalogue raisonné, Giacometti - The Complete Graphics and 15 Drawings by Herbert Lust (Tudor 1970), comments on their impact and gives details of the number of copies of each print. Some of his most important images were in editions of only 30 and many were described as rare in 1970.
In his later years Giacometti's works were shown in a number of large exhibitions throughout Europe. Riding a wave of international popularity, and despite his declining health, he travelled to the United States in 1965 for an exhibition of his works at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. As his last work he prepared the text for the book Paris sans fin...

Paul Delvaux was a Belgian painter noted for his dream-like scenes of women, classical architecture, trains and train stations, and skeletons, often in combination. He is often considered a surrealist, although he only briefly identified with the Surrealist movement. He was influenced by the works of Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, but developed his own fantastical subjects and hyper-realistic styling, combining the detailed classical beauty of academic painting with the bizarre juxtapositions of surrealism.
Throughout his long career, Delvaux explored "Nude and skeleton, the clothed and the unclothed, male and female, desire and horror, eroticism and death – Delvaux's major anxieties in fact, and the greater themes of his later work.
Delvaux was born on 23 September 1897 in Antheit (now part of Wanze) in the Belgian province of Liège. His parents lived in Brussels, but his mother went to her own mother's home to have her first child. The birthplace house would later be destroyed by fire, in 1940.
The father was Jean Delvaux, a prosperous barrister at the Court of Appeal Brussels. The mother was the musician Laure Jamotte, who became a strong, dominant presence in his life, directing, controlling, and repressing his childhood and adolescent desires.
The young Delvaux studied Greek and Latin, and absorbed the fiction of Jules Verne and the poetry of Homer's Odyssey. His artwork was to be greatly influenced by these readings, starting with his earliest drawings showing mythological scenes. His music lessons were conducted in the school's museum room, where a human skeleton in a glass cabinet was always present.
From 1910 to 1916, he studied Classics at the Atheneum of Saint-Gilles, where he was a middling or average student. Upon his graduation, his parents got him an office job with a shipping company in Brussels. It was soon evident that he had no skills or interests in business or law, and he was grudgingly allowed to study architecture at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts despite his ambition to become a painter.
In 1916, he started at the Académie, initially learning the basics of architecture and perspective drawing. He was then disqualified due to his weakness in mathematics, and dropped out after his first year Delvaux was worried about his future career, and passed the time by copying postcards. His mother advised him to paint from nature, and in 1919 he produced his first watercolors, some scenic vistas.
On a family vacation in Zeebrugge in 1919, he met by chance the painter Franz Courtens...
