About the Item

The Cathedral is an original photolithography print on ivory-colored paper, realized by Franco Gentilini (Italian Painter, 1909-1981), in 1970s. The state of preservation of the artwork is excellent. Franco Gentilini (Italian Painter, 1909-1981): Gentilini's artistic world was formed in the context of Italian culture between the Second World War and the postwar period. The artist perfects his technical note characterized by a happy combination of painting and drawing on a preparatory material background mixed with sand. The themes of his works are cathedrals, baptisteries, jugglers and buskers, landscapes with irregular perspectives, women characterized by ankle boots with spool heels, bicycles, trucks, cats and lions. Gentilini is the artist of joie de vivre, despite the fact that in recent years he portrayed a world shattered by the Second World War. Since the mid-fifties his research has been directed towards an essential geometric stylization which, by making use of overturned perspectives and skewed planes, finds a completely new and personal compositional balance. To celebrate the centenary of the artist's birth, several retrospectives were held in public spaces (Pericle Fazzini Museum in Assisi and Museo della Permanente in Milan) organized largely by his wife Luciana Giuntoli who also took care of the collection of his personal archive.

Walter Hoyle (1922 - 2000) King's College, Cambridge (Cambridge Series 1956 - 66) Linocut 46 x 56 cm Signed, titled, and numbered 5/5 in pencil. Hoyle's view of King's College, Cambridge, against a shadowy yellow sky. Hoyle trained at Beckenham School of Art and the Royal College of Art. At the latter he was strongly influenced by Edward Bawden, one of Britain’s greatest linocut printers. Bawden had been commissioned by the 1951 Festival of Britain to produce a mural for the South Bank, and chose Hoyle to assist on account of his great talent. Hoyle moved to Great Bardfield in Essex, becoming a part of the Great Bardfield group of artists; diverse in style, they created figurative work, in stark contrast to the abstract art of the St Ives artists at the opposite end of the country. Hoyle taught at St Martin’s School of Art from 1951-60, the Central School of Arts and Crafts from 1960-64, and the Cambridge School of Art from 1964...
