About the Item
"La Phalène des Isles de la Mer" or "The Moth of the Islands of the Sea" is an original color lithograph by Franz Melchers. This piece was published in L'Estampe Moderne I, an Art Nouveau subscription publication. The blind stamp for this publication is visible through the matting in the lower right corner. Other artists in this publication included Alphonse Mucha, Eugene Delatre, and Marcel Lenoir.

Franz Melchers (1868-1944) was a German-born artist who found most of his success in Belgium and the Netherlands. He settled in Brussels and studied art there. At the World's Fair of 1889, he is present on the flag of Belgium. He also exhibited in the Salon des Cent and the Salon of French artists in 1898. Much of his work is inspired by a combination of Dutch Old Master techniques and Japanese aesthetics.
