About the Item

Gavin Dobson Dipping Ricky Limited Edition Screen Print Edition of 50 Sheet Size: H 70cm x W 50cm x D 0.1cm Sold Unframed (Please note that in situ images are purely an indication of how a piece may look). Part of my celebrated Pool Boy series. Dipping Ricky is a very special edition. The screen print is 5 layers with a monoprint flesh tone layer so every oner is slightly unique as it has been hand painted onto the screen itself before then pulling through. This print is a celebration of summer and swimming. Originally from the North East of England, Gavin graduated in Fine art in 2000, and has been building his portfolio as an artist specialising in painting and screen printing – often combining the two, which helps communicate his chosen narrative. Gavin uses both vivid colours and expressive strokes to create engaging and lively pieces – his recent painting series ‘Landscapes of the Mind’ used the fluidity and movement of the paint to convey how an environment can effect ones state of thinking. Alongside his painting, Gavin is an established screen-printer exhibiting at many galleries across the U.K. and with new clients in New York his international profile is starting to expand. A regular at the Affordable Arts Fair, Gavin was one of 20 artists chosen to work alongside Film Four for an exhibition at Somerset House. His screen-prints often depict colourful, nostalgic images. Iconic designs which are humorous ornamentation and invite an opening for conversation. Gavin takes an original painting and creates many separate layers of half tones to screen-print by hand the final piece. Using this method he captures many textures and depths of colour within a piece of work. He recently designed and created a piece of work for the charity Help Refugee’s ‘Choose Love’ campaign in conjunction with Printclub and the celebrated designer Katharine Hamnett, highlighting the current plight of refugees. Gavin’s ongoing dedication has led to various interviews surrounding his work and being featured in The Times by the art critic, Nancy Durrant, as part of her great art gift guide, has been both motivating and a great platform for him.

Pa la brarma / Palabrarma
By Cecilia Vicuña
Located in New York, NY
Visual poems, the works in Vicuña’s 'PALABRARmas' series are carefully attuned to the power of language. Many of these works incorporate wordplay, and throughout her practice, Vicuña treats words as embodied entities whose forms can be parsed to reveal subliminal meanings across a variety of languages. For the series title, Vicuña has invented the word “palabrarmas,” a fusion of “palabra” (Spanish for “word”) and “armas” (“weapon”). At the same time, “palabrarmas” also suggests an even wider range of meanings, bearing similarities, for instance, to a portmanteau of the the verb “apalabrar” (“to agree on”), and the word “más” (more). Just as Vicuña emphasizes the capacity of words to cause violence and destruction, so she also suggests that they can be potent tools of reconciliation and understanding. Another edition of this work was exhibited as part of 'Cecilia Vicuña...

In 'Sol y dar y dad' (1974/2016), Vicuña again looks to language as she considers notions of truth and community, and she extracts from “solidaridad” (Spanish for “solidarity”) the word “sol” (“sun”) and the Spanish verb “dar” (“to give”). Another edition of this work was exhibited as part of 'Cecilia Vicuña...
