About the Item
This abstract Georges Braque Le tir à l'arc (The Archery), 1960 toys with repetitive motifs that vary ever so slightly. Four white, rectangular figures arranged in a square formation appear as geometrically altered birds. Their small wings flutter out and they fly amidst a soft blue background consisting of perpendicular strokes that relay a textured effect. Grey, shadowlike figures rest immediately behind each white form, providing a striking yet subtle color contrast. The positioning of shadows below Braque's abstract birds makes it look like we are peering from the sky down upon a flock of birds. We look from the position of the sun that shines down on the white birds. Based on the title Le tir à l'arc (The Archery), the viewer may surmise that these abstract figures are indeed birds flitting through the sky, serving as targets for the archers nearby.
Created in 1960, this original color lithograph is from the illustrated book Le tir à l'arc. This work is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 70 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Louis Broder, Paris and printed on chine colle.

- L'efant aux biscuit (Child with Cookie)By Pierre-Auguste RenoirLocated in Palo Alto, CAAn intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris.
