About the Item
GIORGIO GHISI (1520-1582) AFTER PERINO DEL VAGA (1501-1547)
Venus and Vulcan at the Forge
engraving, mid-1550s, on laid paper, proprietary watermark P. PRICARD in a Shield with Flower and Letter B (Briquet 9613, L. & L. 44). References: Bartsch 54; Lewis & Lewis 19. Sheet 190 x 313 mm. In good condition (trimmed just outside the subject, a few small repairs and minor defects)
Provenance:
Pierre Mariette II (1634-1716), Paris (Lugt 1789), dated 1674.
Albertina, Vienna , with their duplicate stamp (Lugt 5g); probably their sale, C.G. Boerner, Leipzig, 25-27 May 1925, lot 643 (with others, ‘Eine schne und reiche Sammlung. Drei Bltter mit Mariettes Signatur’).
.
A very fine, early impression of the rare first state (of four), before the publisher’s address, printing with intense contrasts and remarkable sculptural quality, with touches of burr on Vulcan’s body and near the monogram.
Ghisi’s inscription at the bottom center indicates that he based the engraving on a design by Perino del Vega, although according to the L&L catalogue notes the composition does not correspond to any extant drawing or painting by this artist. The subject of Venus assisting her husband may be interpreted as an allusion to marital duty. The plate was in the inventory of the Calcografia Nazionale in 1816 but was destroyed as obscene after May 1823 at the order of Pope Leo XII, according to Massari.
