About the Item

Zolfi is a beautiful colored lithographed original manifesto on cardboard, realized around 1905 by the Italian artist Gian Emilio Malerba (Milan, 1880 - 1926). Printed by Officine Ricordi, Milan, this advertising poster for "Zolfi Poggi and Astengo Savona" is inspired by the Art Nouveau graphic style. The Liberty atmosphere is palpable from the precence of the female body appearing flat and emptied and turning into a mere twisted black contouring graphic line. The colors are enameled, the languid glances, the fixed smiles, veined by an almost imperceptible underground decadence that is a prelude to the First World War. This is a wonderful vintage advertising poster for the sulfer distributed by Poggi & Astengo, (diluted sulfer was used on grapes to prevent disease and fight off parasites), has the inscriptions printed on lower margin, under the image: "E. Malerba / Off. G. Ricordi and C. Milano / 100 x 200. In excellent conditions, except for two abrasions of the paper on the higher corners. This modern artwork shows the vintage Art Nouveau taste and the incredible Malerba's draftsmanship and his full mastery of the artistic medium, has the dignity of an object of art to collect and could be a colorful and fashionable piece for your sophisticated home furniture. Gian Emilio Malerba (Milan, 1880 - 1926). Gian Emilio Malerba was an Italian painter, one of thefounders of the Italian artistic movement "Novecento" in 1922 in Milan. He studied at the Academy of Brera with Tallone and Mentessi e and made his debut with works influenced by the ways of the Scapigliatura. In 1913 he obtained the Canonica Award and the following year his painting The Black Hat was purchased by the King of Italy. In 1916 he received an award from the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile his art evolves into more clearly constructed compositions. He exhibited at the XIII Venice Biennale with paintings, including the famous Maschere, which are already in tune with the new current of Magical Realism. In 1922 he was also among the founders of the Novecento group which he exhibited in Milan the following year at the Pesaro gallery with the painting La collegiale which was purchased by the Modern Art Gallery of Lima. He disappears at the age of forty-six while he was preparing to participate in the First Italian Twentieth Century Exhibition at the Permanente in Milan. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. The shipping may require additional handling days to require the licence according to the final destination of the artwork.
