About the Item
Giclée print on archival paper
Gigi Mills work is born out of her need and desire to simplify and/or reduce each moment to its absolute essential, by removing details from life that tend to obscure what is truly being experienced. It is also her desire to bare witness to, and often to lift up in beauty what is so often considered unwanted or held in despair.
Ms. Mills was born in Ohio into the well known Mills Brothers Circus family.
Both performing and the plastic arts were admired and encouraged. Early on ballet and modern dance took up much of her focus and formal education. It was not until many years later she began teaching herself to paint. Though she is influenced by several of the early and mid twentieth century painters she has developed a style distinctly her own.

Gigi Mills
Santa Fe artist GiGi Mills abstracts space and forms to merely reference the physical world. Her beaches, seasides and interiors are placed in an impossible mixture of points of view, resulting in truly imaginary spaces. An attention to flat geometric shapes, a rarity of detail, and a tendency to define her figures as silhouettes lends anonymity to her subjects. Mills deconstructs the everyday, then surprise by uniting layers of rich oils to capture ethereal images that are both intensely personal and timeless. The profound effects of nature seem to pray on the artist’s mind. Her images evoke thoughts of endurance and resurgence while also asserting the equally meaningful significance of the ordinary. The reduction of forms to a simplified elegance is essential to her paintings. A successful piece should have the psychological and aesthetic weight to hold the viewer, to entice them to keep coming back to it. Whether she is working on a figure, a landscape, an abstract piece or still life it should attract the viewer with an interest that lies beyond its initial aesthetic impact. Presented in Mills’ painting is a balancing act of grace, awkwardness and elegance. It seems that within this work the extraordinary everyday is enlisted to play its role to the fullest.

Woman and Dog #6
By Fritz Scholder
Located in Bozeman, MT
Born in 1937 in Breckenridge, Minnesota, Fritz Scholder knew what he must do at an early age. As a high school student at Pierre, South Dakota, his teacher was Oscar Howe, a noted Sioux artist. In the summer of 1955, Scholder attended the Mid-West Art and Music Camp at the University of Kansas. He was voted Best Boy Artist and President of the Art Camp. He studied with Robert B. Green at Lawrence. In 1956, Scholder graduated from Ashland High School in Wisconsin and took his freshman year at Wisconsin State University in Superior, where he studied with Arthur Kruk, James Grittner and Michael Gorski.
In 1957, Scholder moved with his family to Sacramento, California where he studied with Wayne Thiebaud. Thiebaud invited Scholder to join him, along with Greg Kondos and Peter Vandenberg in creating a cooperative gallery in Sacramento. Scholder’s first show received an exceptional review. Scholder’s next one man exhibition was at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. His work was being shown throughout the region, including the Palace of Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Upon graduation, from Sacramento State University, where he studied with Tarmo Pasto and Raymond Witt, Scholder was invited to participate in the Rockefeller Indian Art Project at the University of Arizona in 1961.
Scholder is one-quarter Luseino, a California Mission tribe. He met Cherokee designer, Lloyd Kiva New and studied with Hopi jeweler, Charles Loloma. After receiving a John Hay Whitney Fellowship, Scholder moved to Tucson and became a graduate assistant in the Fine Arts Department where he studied with Andrew Rush and Charles Littler...
