About the Item

Bust portrait of two young girls. Colour engraving in crayon manner after François-André Vincent. each 50.8 x 37.4 cm. Circa 1788, Leymarie 662, IFF 6, 74. This sheet is a typical example of the highly developed colour printing technique used by Gilles Demarteau and his pupil and nephew Gilles Antoine le Jeune. The aim was to imitate a coloured chalk drawing as deceptively realistically as possible. The blue passe-partout framing the portrait is also printed. Demarteau created a total of three further reproductions of Vincent's portraits of women. This impressive sheet was created at a time when the demand for colour engravings had already fallen sharply and is rare (see exhib. Cat. Colourful Impressions, ed. by M. M. Grasselli, Washington 2003/04, no. 73, p. 133). Excellent impression, fresh colours, the lower margin trimmed so that the address is missing. Minimal conservation defects, otherwise a very good copy. signed Vincent/ A Paris chez Demarteau Graveur Cloitre S Benoit/ No 662/ Demarteau Sculp. 1788 Crayon style colouring after Francois-Andre Vincent. Color crayon manner engraving. Very fine chalk manner and tool work, printed in red, black, and blue inks. AFTER François-André Vincent, by Demarteau, as Vincent was responsible for the design while Demarteau created the prints. Portraits of Two Ladies, Old Master, Print, 18th Century, French, Demarteau
