About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Giuseppe Capogrossi (1900–1972), titled Superficie (Surface), from the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, No. 5 (double), Juin 1955, originates from the 1955 edition published by Societe Internationale d'Art XXe Siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1955. Superficie reflects Capogrossi’s pioneering symbolic abstraction rooted in his iconic fork or comb glyph, a visual language that transformed postwar European modernism through disciplined structure, rhythmic repetition, and conceptual rigor. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 x 9.75 inches. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris. San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs and woodcuts printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, Milan, and New York, including Mourlot, Curwen, and Amilcare Pizzi, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. The 1960 issue, XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, No. 14, showcased Daphnis et Chloe, one of Chagall’s most celebrated lithographic subjects, coinciding with his work on the monumental suite of lithographs inspired by the same pastoral tale, published by Teriade. Through this publication, San Lazzaro further cemented Chagall’s reputation as the modern poet of color and love, uniting myth, nature, and emotion in visual form. Today, XXe Siecle remains an essential record of 20th-century modernism, celebrated for its seamless integration of fine art, literature, and design. About the Artist: Giuseppe Capogrossi (1900–1972) was an Italian painter whose innovative symbolic abstraction, anchored by his iconic fork or comb glyph, established him as one of the most original, influential, and intellectually rigorous figures of postwar European modernism, working within the same radical artistic evolution shaped by Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Born into an aristocratic Roman family and trained in the classical academic tradition, Capogrossi initially pursued figurative painting before undergoing a transformative shift in the late 1940s that led to the creation of his groundbreaking glyph, a modular calligraphic sign that he applied with remarkable discipline across canvases, works on paper, tapestries, mosaics, and architectural murals. The glyph, neither literal letter nor symbol, became a universal visual element through which he investigated spatial dynamics, rhythm, tension, and the psychological weight of repetition, positioning him at the intersection of Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, geometric abstraction, and early conceptual mark making. As a cofounder of the Origine group with Alberto Burri, Ettore Colla, and Mario Ballocco, Capogrossi championed a purified, essentialist approach to painting that rejected narrative in favor of elemental structures capable of expressing profound philosophical truths, synthesizing influences from Kandinsky, Klee, Mondrian, Cubism, and ancient Roman design into a uniquely disciplined yet poetic visual language that later inspired artists such as Cy Twombly, Peter Halley, Brice Marden, and numerous contemporary abstractionists exploring coded systems and symbolic gesture. His work was exhibited internationally at the Venice Biennale, Documenta, and the Sao Paulo Biennial, and entered the collections of major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate in London, and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. Today, Capogrossi’s art remains highly sought after for its conceptual rigor, graphic power, and timeless resonance, with his auction record set by the sale of Superficie 436 for 1.56 million USD at Christies London on February 12, 2015.
