About the Item
Original hand-colored lithograph of Hugo Meynell by the Scottish/American artist Gordon Ross. Done in 1927. Signed in pencil by the artist lower left. Condition is excellent. Beautifully matted and framed. Under glass. No examined out of frame. Overall framed measurements are 17.25 by 14.25 inches. Provenance: A Massachusetts collector.
Hugo Meynell (1735–1808) was an English landowner and politician who is considered one of the leading figures in the history of fox hunting.
He was known as the "father of modern fox hunting" for his systematic approach to the sport, which was detailed in the book The Meynellian Science or Fox Hunting Upon System.
The artist, Gordon Ross (1873–1946), was a Scottish-American painter and illustrator known for his sporting works and portraits.
Ross created several large prints of notable sportsmen, including Meynell.
