Original Poster United Nations 2020

2020

About the Item

This poster was created for the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) on October 24, 2020, marking the 75th United Nations Day in Geneva. Grégoire MATHIAS, a contemporary artist commissioned since 2020 to create posters for WFUNA, was trained at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. He exhibits in Europe and the United States. Following in the footsteps of Picasso, Miro, Chagall, and Vasarely, who have created posters and lithographs for WFUNA, he renews the genre with a dove of peace composed of flags from member states. The association of flags, carrying a message of strength in unity, has been a classic symbol used recurrently since World War II by the United Nations as well as the Council of Europe, the European Union, and the promoters of the Marshall Plan. Many of these posters are now considered historical and timeless, both visually and symbolically. Notable examples include "United" by Leslie Ragan (1943) and "Together" by I. Spreekmeester (1950). The 2020 United Nations Day poster follows this tradition, conveying the message that the United Nations, whose strength lies in unity around common peace, counts 193 member states 75 years after its creation. The image of the randomly positioned intertwined flags forms a symbol: the dove of peace. It evolves on a black background, evoking a sometimes hostile environment, thus highlighting the fragility of peace. A copy of this model is exhibited at the WFUNA Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland.
