Guerrilla Girls
Guerrilla Girls Do Women Have to Be Naked To Get Into the Met Museum?

1989

About the Item

Guerrilla Girls: Vintage original 1989 poster for: Guerilla Girls: Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into the Met. Museum? Pictured here is the much iconic reclining naked woman who wears a gorilla mask. The image is based on the 1814 painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres entitled La Grande Odalisque 1814. Radically pointing to the facts, that: ‘less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art Sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female’. Screenprinted poster; 1989. Dimensions: 11 x 27.75 inches. Minor signs of handling commensurate with age and medum; in otherwise good overall vintage condition. Provenance: Private collection New York via a noted Manhattan poster gallery who acquired the work from an original Guerrilla Girls member. Unsigned from an edition of unknown; scarce. Published by Guerrilla Girls 1989. A much historic piece which is featured in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. and Tate, London. Further Background & History: “In 1989, the Public Art Fund in New York commissioned the Guerrilla Girls, a collective of feminist artists who maintain their anonymity by wearing gorilla masks in public, to design a billboard. They visited The Met to compare the number of women artists represented in the modern art galleries with the number of naked female bodies featured in the artworks on display. They included the statistics in a poster that asked, "Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum?" The Public Art Fund ultimately rejected it as a billboard, citing reasons of lack of clarity, so the Guerrilla Girls found an alternate public venue for their design: New York City’s buses. The poster has achieved iconic status for its bold, eye-catching graphic design, which includes a reproduction of the female nude figure from French artist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres's painting Grande Odalisque (1814, in the collection of Musée du Louvre, Paris) donning a gorilla mask. It also made an impact with its message, which spoke to the lack of gender diversity at the Museum and the art world writ large in the 1980s.” (source: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
