Gualtieri di San Lazzaros XXe Siecle (Twentieth Century) was one of the most influential art journals of the modern era, founded in Paris in 1938 to unite the greatest painters, sculptors, and writers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro, a visionary editor and champion of modernism, believed deeply in the synthesis of art and literature, creating a publication that served as both a scholarly platform and a collectors object. Across its many issues, XXe Siecle featured original lithographs, pochoirs, linocuts, and wood engravings by leading modern masters including Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Miro, Braque, Leger, Kandinsky, and Calder, printed by premier ateliers such as Mourlot, Atelier Jacomet, and Lacouriere. The double issues of the 1950s reflect a flourishing period of postwar abstraction, sculpture, and avant garde experimentation. Today, XXe Siecle remains an essential reference point in 20th century art history, prized by collectors, museums, and scholars worldwide.
About the Artist:
Gustave Singier (1909–1984) was a Belgian born French painter and leading figure of postwar European abstraction whose radiant biomorphic compositions, shaped by the breakthroughs of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray and created alongside influential peers such as Jean Bazaine, Alfred Manessier, Roger Bissiere, Serge Poliakoff, Jean Le Moal, and Nicolas de Stael, inspired later generations of abstractionists and color field painters, earned placement in major institutions including the Centre Pompidou, the Musee dArt Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and culminated in a record auction price of 170,000 USD for Composition at Christies Paris on December 7, 2022.

Gustave Singier
Gustave Singier was born in Comines-Warneton, Belgium, in 1909. He was active in France as a member of the new Paris School of Lyrical Abstraction and the Salon de Mai. After meeting the painter Charles Walch (1896–1948), who encouraged him and showed him the freedom of pictorial expression, he started participating in numerous Parisian Salons from 1936: the Salon des Independants, the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Tuileries, etc. In 1945, he became one of the founding members of the Salon de Mai. Like other painters of his generation, Singier drew inspiration from Kandinsky, Klee and Mondrian. He also taught in Paris, at the Ranson Academy from 1951–54, then at the School of Fine Arts from 1967–78. Singier died in Paris in 1984.
