Hans Falk was born in Zurich in 1918. He studied at the Lucerne School of Applied Arts and then completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer. In 1942 he designed his first poster, entitled “Ferien” (holidays). From 1942 to 1943, he studied under Max Guber at the Zurich School of Design, where he was to teach animal drawing from 1950 to 1955. In the 1950s, he went on long voyages to the Near East, Spain and the South of France. He lived in Cornwall with his family from 1958 to 1960 and then on the volcanic island of Stromboli in Italy until 1968.

Hans Falk
Hans Falk was born in Zurich in 1918. He was a Swiss painter who lived in New York City, Ireland, England, Switzerland and Stromboli, Italy. He went on to study at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich and the art schools in Lucerne. Falk’s first commissioned works were posters and graphic designs, which won him numerous awards. Among his most important competition wins were a series of seven posters he designed for the 1964 Swiss National Exhibition. Falk went on to travel extensively, living abroad for extended periods in England, New York and Ireland. In his later years, he divided his home between Switzerland and the Sicilian island of Stromboli. Falk died in 2002 after a fruitful career that produced a large body of paintings, posters and sought-after graphic designs, and made him one of the most important contemporary Swiss artists.

Baumberger was one of the most prolific Swiss poster artists, with well over 200 designs to his credit. Beginning in 1917, he regularly worked for PKZ. This poster is not only the best he produced for the company but is also an icon in poster history. The tweed coat is rendered in near-photographic perfection to the point where you can practically feel the fabric. Baumberger took a totally new approach to advertising by ingeniously incorporating the poster's text into the image in the form of the label in the coat. With this poster Baumberger cemented his role as master of the "Object Poster," (a title he earned four years earlier with a classic image of a top hat), and began the trend of "New Objectivity" within the Swiss school of Graphic Design.
