About the Item

Of all of Harold Town's (1924-1990) "Superstar" prints, his double portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is one of the most iconic and charming. 1969, the year this lithograph was created was a significant time for the couple. They not only married in the spring, but recorded the first Plastic Ono Band's album "Live Peace in Toronto 1969" during a local music festival. There were more legendary activities in Canada that year including their "Bed-In" in Montreal where they stayed for seven days holed up at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. The protest/spectacle/holiday culminated in the recording of their legendary "Give Peace a Chance" anthem. And in December they continued their peace messaging with sponsoring billboards around the world that read "WAR IS OVER! If You Want It - Happy Christmas From John and Yoko". Harold Town wisely captured these cultural icons in their prime. Printmaking is an essential element of Harold Town's reputation. In the late 1950's Town established his name with a series of unique prints ("Single Autographic Prints") that included elements of collage. Throughout his lengthy career he completed significant and memorable bodies of work as a print maker. His portraits of this famous couple are paradigms from his exceptional career. The Honeymoon is Over
By General Idea
Located in Toronto, Ontario
In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over the course of 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond. The group was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. They with photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installation, multiples, and performance. With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social (and art-world) issues such as the cult of the artist, mass media, queer identity, and consumerism. Thematic continuity was a key element in General Idea's work. Early on they introduced talismans or logos that they would revisit and re-envision, including skulls, ziggurats, and poodles. This print comes from "Fear Management": a set of 8 prints that celebrates some of General Idea's defining and most beloved motifs by situating them on a crest. This showcases their clever blend of historical fantasy and invented patrimony. Many of these self-mythologizing crests debuted in 1986 during their exhibition at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo entitled: The Armoury of the 1984 Miss General Idea Pavillion. This series is a defining example of one of General Idea's most iconic motifs, the crest, which showcases their clever blend of historical fantasy and invented patrimony. Centered on a handpainted background, "The Honeymoon...

Shung Kang
By Harold Town
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse, ever-changing and not restricted to painting. Somewhat ironically, Town's first significant body of work, which established his reputation, was a group of monotype - which he called "Single Autographic Prints" Town was introduced to lithography by fellow Painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen...
