“3 THE HARD WAY portrays the concept of standing together to fight a system of racism and violence against the Black community — because we are stronger together,” explained Brantley. “I was thinking about building a community, building that totem, stacking one on top of another to reach somewhere closer to where we need to be. I’ve been exploring the language of totems and like the idea that you can combine different ideologies and tie them together in one narrative. Through 3 THE HARD WAY what I’m creating is one very concise theme, of brotherhood and building. Ultimately, the works highlight themes of race and power, but also hope.”

About:
Hebru Brantley creates narrative-driven work revolving around his conceptualized iconic characters which are utilized to address complex ideas around nostalgia, the mental psyche, power, and hope. The color palettes, pop-art motifs, and characters themselves create accessibility around Brantley’s layered and multifaceted beliefs. Majorly influenced by the South Side of Chicago’s Afro Cobra movement in the 1960s and 70s, Brantley uses the lineage of mural and graffiti work as a frame to explore his inquiries. Brantley applies a plethora of mediums from oil, acrylic, watercolor and spray paint to non-traditional mediums such as coffee and tea. Brantley’s work challenges the traditional view of the hero or protagonist and his work insists on a contemporary and distinct narrative that shapes and impacts the viewer’s gaze.

Hebru Brantley
Hebru Brantley is a contemporary painter and sculptor whose work touches on onerous subjects in a manner that is playful to the viewer — he tells his stories through youthful characters and their adventures in a comic-book style.
Inspired by his childhood as an African American in 1980s Chicago, Brantley’s prints, scultpures and other work can be described as an infusion of contemporary Pop art with Japanese anime and the bold aesthetics of street art pioneers Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kaws and Keith Haring. While spray paint is often at the forefront of his mixed-media illustrations, Brantley utilizes a plethora of mediums from oil, acrylic and watercolor to non-traditional mediums like coffee and tea.
Describing himself as an Afro-futurist, Brantley’s energetic narratives combine realistic events with imaginative, fantastical fiction to create fragmented compositions that evoke sentimental nostalgia and inspire confidence.

Dune is a 1984 American epic science fiction film written and directed by David Lynch and based on the 1965 Frank Herbert novel of the same name. The film stars Kyle MacLachlan (in his film debut) as young nobleman Paul Atreides, and includes an ensemble of well-known American and European actors in supporting roles. It was filmed at the Churubusco Studios in Mexico City and included a soundtrack by the rock band Toto, as well as Brian Eno.
