Provenance: Rodger LaPelle Galleries, PA
depicts a scene reminiscent of the Garden of Eden or the Peaceable Kingdom, featuring Adam and Eve surrounded by various animals. • The scene includes a giraffe, a lion, a peacock, a deer-like creature, a bird, and a serpentine creature in a tree.
Helen Siegl was known for her printmaking techniques and often illustrated children's books. • Printmaker and illustrator Helen Siegl was born in Vienna, Austria, on August 18, 1924. She studied architecture and design at the Academie Fur Angwandte Kunst in Vienna, under professor Oswald Haetel, later apprenticing in his studio after graduation in 1946. She emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1952, and that same year she married Theodor Siegl, Conservator of Paintings for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Living in Philadelphia, she became a U.S. Citizen in 1959. • Siegl’s unusual printmaking technique— often combining various kinds of blocks and plates to create an image, including handmade plaster blocks she designed when wood was scarce in Vienna during World War II— helped garner her reputation as a widely respected printmaker. Combined with the originality of her design, her illustrations for such books as “Aesop’s Fables”, “Dancing Palm Tree” (for which she won the New York Times Book Review’s International Award), “Images From the Old Testament”, “Mother Goose”, Oscar Wilde’s “The Selfish Giant”, and others also secured international regard for her artistry as well. • She was a regular contributor to the Philadelphia Print Club, and her work is included in various collections nationwide, among them the National Gallery and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother (The Fifth Commandment) Lithograph Signed/N

Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother (The Fifth Commandment), 1987
6 Color Lithograph on Dieu Donne handmade paper
24 × 18 inches
Pencil signed and numbered 6/84 in graphite on the front
Unframed with deckled edges
This five color lithograph on Dieu Donne hand made paper with deckled edges is pencil signed, dated and numbered from the limited edition of 84. This 1980s Robert Kushner print was created as part of the 1987 portfolio "The Ten Commandments", in which ten top Jewish American artists were each invited to choose an Old Testament commandment to interpret in contemporary lithographic form. The "Chosen" artists were, in order of Commandment: Kenny Scharf, Joseph Nechvatal, Gretchen Bender, April Gornik, Robert Kushner, Nancy Spero, Vito Acconci, Jane Dickson, Judy Rifka and Richard Bosman. This is the first time the print will have been removed from the original portfolio case. (shown). Lisa Liebmann, who wrote the introduction to the collection, observed: "...The image has, for most of us, replaced the word..." With respect to the present work, she writes, "There is a sweet smell of nostalgia to Robert Kushner's view of the FIFTH COMMANDMENT, to honor one's parents. Kushner's subtly ornate use of colors suffuses his subject with a filagreed texture of warmth. In this gentle icon, the traditional duo - all those Ozzies and Harriets in our hearts and on the airwaves -are frames as if by a bubble bath of affection."
ROBERT KUSHNER BIOGRAPHY

Rarely to market, this stunning 1988 woodcut was created by Nora Speyer as part of a portfolio produced for sale by Long Point Gallery, an artist's cooperative in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Long Point Portfolio. This will be the first time the work will be removed from the portfolio.
It is hand signed and numbered from a very small edition of only 30; it is in fine condition, unframed and never framed, and housed in the original portfolio box, with the original colophon page, which also included works by 11 other artists.
For reference and provenance we have included an image of the colophon page from the complete portfolio.
About Nora Speyer:
The most exciting place to me is where I can communicate with the greatest number of artists. I can't live without some artists around. I'm not saying artists are likable. They can be very objectionable, but they are still my world.
