With its stylized elegance, this engraving of the sun god Apollo marks one of the highpoints of Goltzius’s so-called “Spranger period.” One of its most characteristic features are the well developed muscles of the male nudes which are here create an intriguing interplay with the figure’s somewhat feminine pose.
The lyre at Apollo’s feet represents his role as protector of the arts which, according to the aesthetic discourse of the time, allows for an interpretation of the image as an “allegorical affirmation” of the position of the artist: like the god who, according to the inscription around Apollo’s head, eradicates darkness on earth, the artist “brings to mankind the light of his knowledge and his art” (Eva Korazija in cat. Zurich, 1982, no. 23).
